Ok, the antenna with waves around seems like a reasonably likely explanation of the icon.
Someone said it looks like a birthday cake with lots of whipped cream on it. I don't know what kind of connection that should have to 3G though

With sharp eyesight or with reading glasses on then, otherwise, it's just a blur of blue and white, for me at least. Motorola's red icon with the text 3G or 2G is easier to note the difference between.

Thats the Vodafone icon for 3G. Its on the K800 as well.

It's three rings to indicate 3G. Anyway what does it matter what it represents, so long as you can see the little blue squarish-blob who cares?
