there was talk (here and here for example) 2 years ago of dropping this agreement but I don't find anything following that up as to whether they did or not

Air resistance is a key factor, like in the Veyron. It needs 200 something bhp to get to 150mph but it needs like another 800 more for the next 100mph.

Another thing is that, remember metal expands when heated so it would come to a point when the cylinders wouldn't be able to move and the engine will seize.
