ok.
look here
http://www.gsmworld.com/about/history.shtml
1982
- Groupe Speciale Mobile (GSM) is formed by the Confederation of European Posts and Telecommunications (CEPT) to design a pan-European mobile technology
according this, gsm is apan-european story, so the usa wasnt screwed, cos europe did it for itself. donnow when the us goverment started to use that frequences, but how can a european mobile "platform" crew the usa?
maybe your theory has some segments, which shows in a unclear direction...

But at some point, GSM = "Global Standard for Mobility." So this obviously was intended to be international in scope.

yes, indeed. when u read the link i posted above, there are listed many non european countries aswell, which joined later "the club". i do get your point, its really crap, that some models arent sold in the usa, just because of internal security and reasons...
what does the american ppl think about it? did u talked to some others about it?

But this could actually be the phone manufacturers' fault. Making a quad-band phone is easy enough so why don't they just make their whole ranges quad-band?

cos on this way they can sell the products "twice". if u want a quad band, buy it

if it comes to standard, they dont sell tha much, as now.

Maybe you guys should apply the argument the other way round; what if the bands that North America is using for its GSM is already used by other countries for other things already? So, small sacrifice to single out North America instead of the many other countries. Get what I mean? Besides I think back in those days, North America was focused more on CDMA no? Its only recently that they have begun to take notice of GSM…
I could be wrong, but just my
USD$ 0.02 anyway.
