I have a suggestion to improve the handset proposed by Mobman.
1. Keep the P series flip keys as on P990.
2. Add QWERTY keyboard inside the flip (that two layers keyboard), available only when the flip is opened.
3. Make different versions - flip as mentioned above, sliding keyboard etc.

haha, that looks awesome

I hope SE's next P-series phone doesn't have keyboard, just big touch screen, such as iPhone has.

nice idea!
flip and removable keyboard have been a "mark"
on all P series, except that P1i.
~edit, not keyboard, but keypad

I think the suggestion that the screen must be huge like imate is very plausible,i also love a phone which is mostly screen!!if they must include buttons for those who like it then keep that flip with qwerty on one side and p990 style on other.it should be removable though for those of us who dont need buttons in the way.

i'm glad that the p1 has no flip. hope the p2 will be the same. maybe a 16m colors and 320*480 screen
of course, some other improvements as well....

That might work for YOU but lets not forget that the m600 style keypad is not to everyones liking and has come up for some harsh criticsm.a removable flip would obviously be the best option together with qwerty(on back side of flip) as fans of the m600 style keypad are very few and

needs to give the majority what they want to make the phone a hit.

Great, however instead of adding a small flip like the P990i it should be the size of the screen and should revel the entire screen behind.

i wold never buy a solely touchscreen device, purely because i HATE virtual keyboards, and hate even more the crap handwriting recognition software.
I agree with the idea of a sliding keyboard. That way people who want to be able to type properly can, the device isnt the size of the moon like the p990i, and you still get a big screen (although to be frank the m600i/p1i is big enough. Its not like a desktop computer or UMPC).
I also hate flip designs. they just gt in the god damned way. Why put a huge screen in there if you cant use half of it without a flappy useless thing hanging off the bottom? I don't really want to have to hold my phone by a flimsy piece of plastic i dont trust just so i can type.
In other words, the m600i's layout works. Don't change it unless your going to stick a bigger sliding keyboard UNDERNEATH the screen (not on top)

very interesting comments. From where exactly did you get this information?
SE must have had some very good feedback for them to use the m600 keyboard on their (lets face it) make-or-break p1i
i for one have not heard a single bad word said about the m600 keyboard and considering people on esato are always quicker to criticize than to praise i think that is pretty remarkable!
And as for havinq a qwerty on the back of the flip - we all know that the p910 qwerty did actually get criticised alot! i for one found it next to useless... great phone tho.

Personally i am disappointed as well at what SE came out with in the form of the P1i keyboard. Dual-letter keys seem quite user-UNfriendly, i have tried the M600 keyboard a few times and still make lots of typing mistakes.
I think the best solution would be : no visible keyboard on front panel, a sliding qwerty keyboard for those who like to type, an on-screen keyboard of course, and then 2 or 3 soft key buttons, to avoid unnecessary presses on the screen (fingerprints, smudges,...) and make the whole UIQ experience enjoyable. That way, a lot of space is saved on the front panel for a larger screen.
