for me, older version of walkman (i.e. W800)
sounds better than newer like W850.
due to absence of auto gain control.
depends though, some older phone with newer fw also have AGC.

as jplacson said. headset play important role in overall sound quality.
so better try yourself. me personally don't like N91 sounds,
no matter how i set the EQ. but some people did like N91, so its up to u.

In my experience in using every single walkman phone released (and I'm a music buff), I would have to say that the W800i, W810i and W900i all have the same sound output volume and quality and are the best of the lot.

Unfortunately, newer SE models since then have far too much compression. K800i, W950i, W850i, W880i all have compression applied to the sound output to perhaps limit any damage to peoples hearing if you listen to loud music full blast all day. This limits the peak high end sounds only (such as when a bass drum hits) and doesn't give the correct volume levels unless you turn the volume down a couple of levels.

This is why the W810i is still my favourite music phone.

IMO the W810 has the lowest volume out of the three (W800,W810, W900), moving from a W800 to a W900 i found the sound of W900 alot more clear, crisp and loud

Oh put a plug in it you so totally nokia biased i wonder what you doing in a primarily forum lol.the n91 is LOUDER BUT NOT CLEARER.and either way the n91 is a brick even a w900 more compact. W800 music outperforms my n95 any day.imagine it with a bose headset .
Bugsiiy go for a w810i you will like it more than w800i since it's much more user friendly(no joystick nicer buttons),has edge and nicer display.

that's exactly what i mention, Auto Gain Control.
listening to my prev. W550 was loud and good (not extremely),
but now in K800 the AGC stopping me to hear it loud.
even worse, my fren just bought a new W810 and it has AGC too,
while my cousin W810 which was bought much earlier doesn;t have.

i wish to remove this function, its very bad. unless you always put megabass all the time. but no way i could do it, just bear with it
