how do we know that the phone isnt stolen and he just wants to unlock it and sell it on =/

I would do this too. The best way as soon as your phone is not A200 platform.. If it is sony ericsson different than K850 or W910 and is supported by XS++, connecting to XS++ and reading phone lock code will solve the problem 100% and it's FREE... Anyway, if your phone is DB2020 platform like K800 or W850 and etc... the code will be reset to 0000.
