Here's my 2 cents - and maybe that's all it's worth. (And first let me say, I treat my belongings - phones included - like gold. I never drop them, bump them, or let them near water. I always keep them in a padded leather case on my belt or in a snug pocket in my briefcase - never loose in a bag or pants pocket with other items. And I'm most paranoid about properly "ejecting" USB-connected phones from the computer, given the W600i fiasco.)
The T616 was my first GSM phone, purchased during AT&T Wireless' first life. It survived 3 owners over 5 years
without a single fault (including the joystick!) before a fatal drop in a parking lot from the last owner. It inspired me to buy a T637, which I still have to this day, as it still looks and works like new.
Then I bought an S710a, which after its initial novelty proved more bad than good. Bluetooth, supposedly one of
's greatest strengths, was unstable on that phone (both the one I bought, and the exchange unit). And the UI was randomly slow - half the time, I couldn't even take a decent picture, because the UI imposed several seconds of lag between pressing the shutter button and actually recording the image. Which is completely unacceptable for a camera-specific phone!
I assumed my S710a experience was the exception, not the rule, so I next bought a W810i - which was trouble from the start. The first one gave me an unrecoverable White Screen of Death® 10 hours after I first turned it on. The exchange unit lasted 9 months until the camera began to seize up while focusing, and the Fastport started failing to recognize accessories (e.g. the HPM-70 stereo headset). The next exchange unit was fine, until I received another White Screen of Death® upon turning the phone on after an overnight charge. (Luckily, this one was cleared by leaving the battery out all day.)
As if all of this weren't bad enough, I've confirmed that the
app
does not properly handle AAC music files, despite Sony Ericsson's claims to the contrary. The player will randomly freeze up, then pop up a "Playback Failed" message, when playing through a selection of AAC's. This has happened on all 3 W810s, with 3 different firmware versions, and 3 different memory cards (Sony 512MB, Sandisk 2GB, Sandisk 4GB). I also have a W300i, which exhibits the same sypmtoms, even after 2 different firmware versions and 2 different memory cards (Sony 256MB, Sandisk 2GB). All of the above does not vary with my music selection, either. So the question is,
what good is a phone that can't reliably play music?
I replaced my aging iPod with the W810i, and that was a mistake. I now have an iPod Nano on the way, and unless
announces a miracle next week, a
Nokia E50 will also be on order with me. I always liked
for their interface,
capabilities, Apple iSync compatibility, and amazing OEM accessories. But clearly, their quality and reliability are no more - The T616/T637 were, in fact, the exception and not the rule
