as much as possible, remove it safely... otherwise removing it when the conn is 'idle' is also bit safe, but this ought to be limited to situation when you are in a dead hurry or the system fails to respond...

Its actually always safe in my experience so long as you dont have a transfer in progress. Under your 'removable disk' properties there's a checked option that enables quick removal because cache writing is disabled, you can check it out.
