> So is P1 a P990i replacement ?
Bookmark topic
The P1i is obviously a successor and replacement to the P990 - it's just not the successor that many existing P990 owners were hoping for, that's all. That phone hasn't been announced, and isn't likely to appear before the middle of next year.
The P1 is a complete upgrade to the P990 nonetheless - it's functionally identical or better in every department, the most obvious improvements being to the memory, which will make it a far more useful device.
The choice of form factor is controversial, and I'm guessing this is what prompts some posters to declare it "lacks some functionality" from the P990. This stems from the popular misunderstanding that the "flip closed" mode of the P990 is necessary for one-handed operation of UIQ3. In truth, M600 owners have been using full screen UIQ3 with one hand, comfortably, since the phone was released last year - the M600/P1 form factor is perfectly designed for that - but I guess tastes vary.
For me, the change of form factor is a substantial improvement on the P990, and I think SE would be making a big mistake if they ever went back to the flip design in a later phone, but time will tell on that score.

The P1 is the replacement for the M600, upgrading the OS and adding a camera.
The true replacement for the P990 has not been announced yet, and it will have a flip, same amount of RAM as the P1 but faster processor. Read Eldars comments in his
P1 review at mobile-review.com. (Search for "flip" in the article.)

P-series has always been marketed as a Phone-PDA(i.e: phone first), since P800.......
.....the flip, like it or not, also makes P-series the ultimate choice: numberpad/D-pad/softkeys(Phone) OR(removed/opened) QUERTY keypad(PDA). The fact that, being removable, the flip also makes the P-series the only modular phone on Sale - what other phone can you disassemble without nullifying the warranty on it?? - also, IMO, means

will continue P-series as Phone-PDA, even though P1i is more PDA-Phone.....
Just wait until the end of this year......

BBS,
So far i agree with you, i actually think it was the M600 replacement, but due to the bad reputation the P990 got (although i think mine is superb) they decided on a last minute name change to call it a "P" phone as a marketing stop gap, buying a bit more time for the new flagship model, i personally believe a larger screened version similar format to P1 with some nice surprises will come along soon.
I always remove my P series flip the day i buy them, P990 is an easy one handed device flip off, i couldn't care less if the flip never returns.

The M600 was a relatively low-cost Messaging oriented phone (hence "M") designed primarily for the corporate market, keeping costs down by excluding the camera which many businesses don't want, as well as other niceties such as wifi and FM radio. It was UIQ3 stripped down to the very basics.
The P1 is a premium, flagship device being marketed as a high-end smartphone direct to camera-loving consumers. Short of losing the keyboard, it couldn't be less like the M600, or more like the P990 it replaces. Look beyond the form factor!

The P1 is M600 replacement indeed IMO

. Well it has more RAM than any

smartphone ever and it should be much more stable and reliable compared to the previous models. The P1 has the design like the M600. I think the "real" P series phones have the traditional flip keyboard on them.

So it appears from his post that the P1 replaces the P990, although i suspect it is just an opinion, it will be ineresting to refer back to such statements if a more obvious P990 replacement is offered with a more traditional "P" sseries display size.

Did you start this thread to hear people's opinions or to discuss (rumours about)

's plans? Most posts in this thread have been talking about what they want

to do and what they think about the flip.
Do I like the rocker keys on the pretend-QWERTY keyboard of M600/P1? I'd rather buy the Nokia E90 than going for the major downgrade from P990 to P1
(It doesn't matter that the P1 has more RAM and (probably) more stable if I hate everything else about the phone!)

Hi all,
As a new P990i user, i called the SE E-Shop to find out about special offers on bluetooth headsets.
I asked the guy about the P990 and he said that by the end of July, SE will no longer stock it and the P1 is indeed the replacement!
I asked him if it will be discontinued, he said he does not know 100% about other stockists/retailers but that at the Eshop the P1 is definitely replacing the P990i. He also said that as far as he knows, manufacture of P990i will stop in a few weeks according to info passed on to Sales.
He said he had ' a play' with the P1 and it was great. He said the camera is better than K800i as itakes better video too...
So, according to SE Sales, the answer is YES-the P990 will cease to be stocked with them and the P1i is the replacement.
Hope this helps...

AbuBasim, i started the thread to hear peoples opinions, but get a bit worried when posts are frased like official facts when its just an opinion, as nobody knows for sure yet,
my mentioning of my own view on the "Flip" was simply to point out how unimportant i think the flip is, ive always hated them on P series & think they are not needed, so P1 not having a flip isnt MY reason for questioning its flagship model potential, the main pysical problem i have with P1 is i would quite like a P series that was bigger than P990, rather than smaller.
Moemoe,
really i suppose i'm hoping the general feeling is that the P1 IS a replacement fpr P990 in the world of retail outlets, but will hopfully turn out to be a short term replacement untill a more bricklike P comes along. letting the P1 format stay alongside with its own obvious appeal.
