I agree with the quote from koto. Having myself used first i-mate JAMin, then P990, next i-mate JasJam and finally back to P990, I can say from my own experience that the P990 with the last firmware is a dream compared to Windows Mobile 5 when comparing stability. The UIQ 3 UI is a little bit slower than WM5 but that is OK as long as I can keep my phone on for several days without hangs/crashes. It all comes down to usage. I do not install any third party software as I find the bundled PIM and QuickOffice software more than enough for my own needs.

Goldenapple, my camera has never shut down or hung, also can i just point out that your "bigging" up the P1, but how do you, me or anyone else know if its actually any good in use, as they are not out in the market, this tendancy for us to think everything will be like a wonderfull dream when the "new" product arrives is why so many people get depressed when they find they get one with glitch's,
P1 may turn out to be a stinker, P990 is cheap & a known quantity, & i think i'd rather pay (lots less) for a known quatity.

i BOUGHT a p990i last week (should be here soon) - can't wait to find out if it's as crap*y as one would think... Yeah, I'm a cynic: I really got one to see how bad it is (i happen to find it butt-ugly as well, but big screens are for me...) - but then a) I might be positively surprised, and b) my phantastic e61 has saved me a lot of money, and will continue to keep me from many more useless, unecessary purchases, so I can indulge my curiosity! We'll see! but no way would I have considered it as my "serious" main phone

i'd say, don't buy one if ur after web browsing...it keeps exiting the browser if the webpage is loaded...not a problem with my old xda IIs. So id say, go with the p1. higher rom/ram, better performance. still, it's a nice phone bec of the qwerty and cam. OH. the cam can get really annoying sometimes too. It shuts down by itself or hangs...
No such probs (especialIy web browser exiting, cam prob really rare with last few fw's, non so far with R6), that's why I'm saying the user experiences vary tremendously. Btw, the 9.3mb of RAM I mentioned above should be vastly improved with SMP, I'm just not using it right now to test the phone's stability & capability as it is. Memory at startup is satisfactory at 16.9mb for my phone. The phone was my lifeline when I was travelling in France, used it for navigation, translation, communication, browsing & imaging (took 2200± pics) & it didn't let me down. I love this phone, probably because I've gone through so much with it.

I need to put it very clear - i think the p990 is a great buy for its actual price, and i am still enjoying it, despite it having some flaws
it has nothing to do with me being angry with SE, like all the other early buyers of UIQ3 devices, by their abandon of fw development too early for what we deserve

There has been a lot of great and honest input in this thread which is great.
I have had mine for a couple of months and one of the main reasons that made me buy it was the price. I was aware of the bugs and issues and I was also aware the latest updates had sorted out MOST of them and even though I am still with original Voda fw (for now) I am having good usage. I have experienced some of the bugs mentioned in the various threads, but to me they're not critical. To other users they are. Overall as an email client and browsing the internet using WLAN its a pleasure to use,
I don't find it as quick as a non-smart phone at all but it excels in other areas.
I paid £200 for a used one and now you can get new unbranded ones for £150, which in my opinion makes it a steal. I feel for the people who paid £300 - £400 for one who aren't happy and the lack of SE support is truely gruesome. However, if you can live with its 'quirks' its not a bad buy at all for the price.
Hope that helps.

i sold mine as well. some like it, some don't like it, some even hate it...doesn't actually matter, everybody has preferences and for what the phone is needed. i actually bought the p990i 3 weeks ago because it was cheap and because i thought that after all this time the firmware updates could make this phone finally usable. but i was really disappointed, for my needs the phone is just useless (slow, not enough memory, applications are only few,...)
so today i would never advise anyone to buy one unless they don't care about the functions and just want a smartphone with a *bad* reputation and spend a third of the initial price (wonder why!!).

P1 should be in a lot better position by release time than the P990 was.
