Why would a phone coming much later than N95 used an outdated version of the symbian OS?

On a seperate note:the P1i is a PDA meant ofr the professional folks,absence of HSDPA could mean lack of understanding of market trends and expectations from various catagories,also too many shortcuts on the main menu looks kind of akward

What I think is strange is that at phone like w910 which will proberly be populer with younger people has HSPDA and supposed top smartphones for buisness men like w960 and P1 dont have that feature they will make use of!
(SE smartphones are so full of bugs I would go for a nokia SP)

There thinking (which is really strange IMO and everyone else would strongly agree) is to release "fill in" models with no significant upgrades until their true successors are announced and released which will have the significant features such as HSPDA. A similar case is the M600 and W950, which dont offer WIFI and camera, although look what has been released this year but the P1 and W960 which offer camera and wifi as improvements. This is unrealistic, as we need HSPDA this year in smartphones, not to mention wifi g. You are left with a phone that offers most or some features that are nessesary but you are expected to make do without the omitted features that are making their debut in other manufacturers handsets or in a different model within SE. Personally, i feel it will (and has already) left SE behind other manufacturers in technology, which was held so well in previous years.

That would make sence. E.g K800- FILLER K810- Sucssesor k850

the answer is not that complicated.
SE have different hardware platforms for the different product lines (which are used in different R&D centers responsible for the different product lines).
Typically the underlying hardware platform provides the basic functionality (e.g. GSM, 3G, GPRS, video/LCD driver, camera driver, processor, memory, storage, etc.) and you can then customise the basic platform to make different models (e.g. add a 1.3, 2 or 3.2 Megapixel camera, extra flash for song storage like in Walkman range, etc.).
There is a HW platform for the smartphones (M600, P990, W950, P1, W960) that is capable of running Symbian OS + has WiFi support.
There is another platform for 3G phones, which obviously now includes support for HSDPA in the basic platform (Z750, W910), but these are not running Symbian OS, do not support 3rd party applications (except for Java based apps) and do not have WiFi support in the platform.
A platform for GSM only, which obviously now includes support for EDGE in the basic platform (e.g. W300, Z310 etc.).
A platform for quad band GSM (e.g. T250) and a platform for super cheap GSM models, typically only dual band support (e.g. J100).
Quite simply, SE faced a choice, bring out new models during 2007 based on the existing + stable HW platform for the smartphones (i.e. same basic platform as for the M600, P990, W950) = P1, W960.
Altenatively wait for a newer version of the HW platform for the smartphones (that includes HSDPA) = probably late 2007 before the platform is ready, which means no new smartphones including HSDPA until end 2007 or more likely early 2008 + high risk for delays and problems that you always get when you update the basic platform.
So basically SE (wisely) decided to go with their existing HW platform for smartphones and release the P1 + W960 during 2007 + in parallel make the platform updates for new smartphones with HSDPA to be ready early 2008.
Everything in life is a trade off
