just reading here and hope u don't mind me asking, but does a locked payg mean that u have to get the sim that is in the phone when u buy it unlocked before u can remove it and replace it with your preferred sim?

and if so, how do u know if u r buying a locked phone... does it say on the box?

To unlock you Tescso Phone, you have to place £30 of credit on the Tescos sim card.

Tescos will then give you the code for free. You also get to keep the credit on the sim card as well.

You mentioned tha you would be charged 40p per sms.

you can Text to other networks for 10p on Tescos, so not sure where you got 40p from?

@LesleyAnn You mentioned how do you know if you purchase a locked or unlocked handset.

I will try to explain.

All the networks in the UK subsidise there phones, So to gt money back they network lock there phones, If you require the unlock then you either have to pay the network or take it to a stall, Sometimes tho this can damaged the phone.

Orange, Vodafone, T-Mobile, virgin and 3 all lock there handsets down on both contract and PAYG.

O2 lock PAYG but not contract, O2 have the least branding on there phones too.

Tescso and Virgin PAYG lock there handsets, but will unlock for free as long as the sim card has £30 of credit on. If you want to use the credit after then thats up to you.

If you purchase a phone from CPW, phones 4 u, online shop (Not inclucding the networks) then on contract you may get a sim free phone on Vodafone. O2 you will get a sim free phone, Orange and T-mobile it will still be locked.

on PAYG The sometimes if you are lucky at CPQ you can sometimes get a simfree handset. But please ask first.

AS a Rule,

All networks are Sim Locked unless you have a o2 Contract phone then 99.9% of the time its unlocked.

Hope his helps
