I forgot about this thread..
I nagged and nagged T-mobile on the issue even forwarding them traceroute outputs of the failing connections - and they kept denying the problem.
BUT a few weeks ago it all started working again and I had done nothing my end. Obviously T-mobile did in fact have a problem and they've now resolved it - but not admitted what the problem was.
I have since upgraded to a Nokia N95 with HSDPA and it downloads at well over 1 Mbit per second - lovely.
So... my advice is to nag 3 and always re-open the same support request if possible so that their support system keeps flagging it up as an unresolved fault instead of them thinking they are separate faults that have been cleared up. It puts extra pressure on the engineers to fix it.
