@ JoolsG4

If I were to install Windows XP/Vista and run it through boot camp, would I still have to secure it i.e. buy norton anti-virus, clean the registry and all that stuff? That's a real headache right now!

Do Macs need any protection of some sort?

Thanks in advance

Windows running on Apple hardware is exactly the same as Windows running on any other PC manufacturers hardware. So yes, it would still be as prone to viruses and malware as a 'regular' Windows PC.

Mac's don't come with any virus or malware protection because there isn't any viruses or malware for the Mac (in the wild anyway, there was a couple of unreleased proof-of-concept viruses which never spread and were quickly patched).

Macs are great computers. Fun and dead simple to use/maintain. So many nifty things - Expose, Dashboard, iLife etc. all included. And there's none of that (in my experience) feeling of waiting for the computer to catch up to you. It always feels as though the computer is responsive.

Thing is, I'm still stuck with Windows purely because overall, in terms of hardware, they still offer the best value; Macs are exensive in comparison. And also, I just can't get away from the Windows exclusive programs that I use. Despite the dual boot choice that you get with Macs, it's not seamless, nor is it the best solution if you need to access things quickly.

The interfaces are different, but at the end of the day, they do the same things in slightly different ways. It's up to you really, but it isn't the end of the world whichever you pick. They'll both do a fine job.

@shaliron

You obviously have not compared like-for-like Macs to PCs pricing lately.

Yes, you can get cheaper PCs than Macs, but on the cheapest Mac you get loads of stuff as standard that you don't get on the cheapest PC.

For instance, the cheapest Mac laptop comes with the following as standard:

- Built-in AirPort Extreme (802.11n)
- Built-in Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate)
- Built-in iSight web camera
- Built-in Mini-DVI video out with support for DVI, VGA, S-video, and composite video output
- Built-in 10/100/1000 BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet)
- Two USB 2.0 ports
- one FireWire 400 port
- Combined optical digital/headphone out
- combined optical digital/audio line in
- microphone
- speakers

Now, go on to the web-site of your favourite PC manufactuer, and configure their basic Windows laptop with the above features. You'll end up with a laptop costing more than the equivalent Mac!

This has been proved over and over again. And that cost comparison doesn't include the (actually very useful) software you get with a Mac.

So no, you can't get a cheapo £399 Mac laptop - Apple just don't go down that low. But when you compare like for like, prices are the same or even cheaper.

Great thank you again, could you explain to me what these are for?
-ExpressCard/34 slot
-glossy widescreen display (how is this better than the normal one?)
-DVI output port

Also is there anyway to connect a xbox 360 to the screen? Basically I'm going uni and dont want to bring my TV with me.

Oh and one more thing the macbook pro, does it come with anything that acts like a TV tuner?
