Ok thanks for the info. I'm not going to give him the number. It's not worth the risk.

Scammers usually ask for the IMEI number so they can clone a lost/stolen phone with a legitimate IMEI, thus letting the lost/stolen phone be used-after all a blacklisted handset is no use to anyone in the UK! Hope this helps :-)

not possible. the network must see that the person reporting the phone lost or stolen has used a phone with that IMEI on their network before they can action the block/bar

The original owner can do that yes,
but whats to stop them blocking the handset after they have sold it on eBay 6 months down the line, I mean this does happen!
totally off I know but you do have to be prone to risks now a days

yes, but the OP was asking what the potential ebay buyer could do with the IMEI if he gave it out and you responded to that question by incorrectly suggesting that the potential buyer could block the phone and I was correcting that assertion
phew!

theres a site on the net somewhere that blocks IMEI's though couldn't that person just use that to block the phone anyways if they had the Identity number
personally giving IMEI's is a bad thing I wouldn't recommend it!

maybe if hes so bothered do the CheckMend for him...and screenshot the results blocking out any secure info using MS paint such as IMEI no..
either way i wouldnt give the IMEI out even if hes a trusted member on ebay...theres plenty of other buyers

but that site really works? i think every imei entered there is just saved to be used to clone the imei and thus existing 2 phone with same imei
