T-Mobile let you upgrade three months before the end.

three months 50 pounds - two months 100 pounds - last month FULL upgrade.

Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to upgrade 9 months early?

Phone 02 up and ask them it's free afterall to use there Customer Services

btw im sure your right with the method of your friend upgrading early a friend of mine said he upgrades every 9 months though with 0range,

0range rang me the other day asking me about my current contract and when it ends took a few details about my tariff aswell

btw 02 are pretty cheesey I wish I could cancel my contract with them now,
they told me I can upgrade november 23rd but i want shot of them..

If I start moaning I want my Pac code now 4 months earlier what are they likely to say to me?

they are likely to ask u to pay up a early cancellation fee before giving a pac code, if you want to end ur contract early.
