HSDPA is great for surfing on the move or any place with no Wifi. On HSDPA, you get about 1.2Mbps as compared to regular 3G which is about 300kbps or so.
Either way, 3G is ok...nothing great but OK. If I need to surf real fast, I'd rather find a WiFi hotspot, sit down, and log on. HSDPA coverage isn't that extensive just yet... and your phone will most likely be defaulting back to the 3G network. If you currently switch off your 3G..that means you're surfing over GPRS which is REALLY slow compared to even regular 3G. Realistically, you're probably getting 50-60kbps on your W880 set to GPRS. So the P1i with 3G is still ok compared to what you're used to surfing on now.
I was thinking about the same issue as well... P1i/W960 no HSDPA... if I should get it. At the end of the day, I tried the HSPDA network availability here and it's still spotty...so most of the time, you're actually still on 3G. And when I'm in a mall, office, or at home... why would I choose to surf over the much slower HSDPA network, when I've got WiFi?

I have unlimited plan and use my 3G to the max, it's my main source of internet connection, I only use wifi at Starbucks where it's free. That's why I was bummed when I found out that P1 had no HSDPA. Apparently I suspect it is for the reason that HSDPA wouldn't be much faster than normal 3G with the outdated system it has, therefore it doesn't really matter if the P1 has HSDPA or not. But on the other hand, it matters to me personally and it would determine my next choice of phone because while 3G is currently fast, nothing is ever fast enough
Without this turning into a flaming war, I use Nokia, I have to same that I am disappointed that SE chose to stay with older technology, i.e. 803.11B and no HSDPA. I use my phones (N95 & E90) quite often for VoIP calls and HSDPA makes this happen very transparently. You SE guys really need to start banging heads to make SE listen. There is no reason to use 5 year old technology in a supposedly ground breaking phone as the P1.

And another question which seems obvious, just have to ask, is it simple to just connect to WLAN and browse the net and emails from there and not through general 3G on phones having WLAN? Dont want to accidently get my phone bill up just to accidently browse the net with regular 3G and not WLAN
Thanks in advance.
You should be able to organise your different internet connections into groups and assign one of these groups to your email accounts.
All you have to do create a 'group' with just your WLAN connection so that when you are in a hotspot your phone will connect to the WLAN connection alone.
Because there is no other internet connections in the group, there is nothing else for it to connect to should the WLAN fail or not be available for any reason.
There is plenty of other info on this site.

I wouldn't say the P1i has been billed as ground breaking. To me its just a refinement of current technologies.
The original poster is asking whether he will miss out right now by not having a HSDPA device, when in his country right now the service is patchy. The answer to that is to find out where HSDPA deployment is on his operator's roadmap and what services are in the pipeline that will take advantage of the improved data speeds. Not forgetting how much extra it might cost to upgrade if anything.

Agreed! HSDPA should be standard on all highend divices.

if you do need HSDPA then wait for the P3i

The key thing to understand is that HSDPA is just a faster variant of what we all know now as "3G" - so if you're somebody that turns off 3G anyway, you'll get absolutely zero benefit from HSDPA. It will have no effect on your basic GSM/GPRS speed at all.
Personally, I use 3G for browsing where it's available, and I find it a good speed for all the basic web and email stuff I do on the phone (my current M600i). I don't feel any burning need for more speed, so I'm more than happy to go with the P1 later. As far as I can see, HSDPA is only of real benefit if you're going to regularly use the phone as a modem for your laptop or whatever, so you can get real broadband speeds (at immense cost) on the move - but still only while you're in a 3G area.

If you can prove to me the avarge download speed on internet is > 5 Mbps, then I will agree with you. Otherwise I say it realy does not matter. especially not on a phone.

I can say the inverse. Prove that it's less than 5 Mbps. I have 24 Mbps at home as do many in my area. Just because not every one has higher speeds does not mean it is not needed. I don't drvie my car everyday, but does that mean it's not needed?

My mistake. You are correct. The P1, as has been demonstrated in other threads in this forum, is not ground breaking or anything new, however for the price being charged for it, the latest and greatest technology should be supplied. Not older technologies.

dont wanna tilt this thread off-topic but I think the P1i price is very reasonable, at least in the EU. its not an N95-killer, spec-wise. its just a competent business smartphone.
