I use my e-mail client for over a year now ( did before with P910i and M600i) and works flawlessly. Just go the the Help menu at Google (they do a great job explaining everything) while setting up your e-mail client.
This one helps you with your SE e-mail client:

A small tip when using the built in client is to change the login name to recent:whatever@gmail.com (I.E. add recent: before your mail address). This is only valid for POP (not SMTP, so you can't use the check box for same login info), and will download all mails received in the last 30 days, regardless of them being downloaded by another POP client (using the non-recent: account).

This comes in handy if you, like me, have set you computer to download mails every 5 minutes (which means any mail will end up on either the phone or the computer, not both). I my case, I prefer the Gmail app, though.

Just select the 'download mail, even if its already been downloaded' option in the fowarding and pop settings in Gmail.

That way you get it sent to both phone and computer =)

Thanks for all the tips guys (girls?)! In the meantime I got Gmail (not the app, but whatever ...) up and running on the build in mail client! It works great!

Ok ... you won't believe this! I discovered the possibility to switch off the proxy at the Internet accounts config. No big deal you may say, but all of a sudden I could download the Gmail app! Unbelievable ...
