Exactly. That's the purpose of the list. To make sure the phone doesn't offer taboo words as suggestions. Imagine the number of lawsuits, especially in the US if the phone suggested "yid" . . . That'd be almost enough for USA/Israel to declare war on Sweden and Japan . . .

In all my 34yrs being alive - and considering I'm black, I've NEVER come across a slang/derogatory word such as "yid". it must be a very OLD profanity because I grew up in a predominantly jewish/russian neighborhood growing up in North York, Toronto and never heard of it. I'm glad I never did ... but saddened that I know its existence and what it means today. On my daily quest to learn something new ... this is NOT what I had in mind. Good find, but saddened that its found.
I'm curious as to why such other words - derogatory - don't show up in this list.
I should have to list them nor should anyone else ... but I'm very curious. IS there a direct correlation as to WHERE this particular P1i is sold or directed to as apposed to another?
Would we see other derogatory terms in other models being shipped elsewhere catered to that market as to NOT offend those natives?? Hmm.
I really don't think a lawsuit could be effective let alone successful
1) you'd have to prove in a sentence that the undesirable word wasn't sought after, and if it did show up would be out of context.
2) you'd have to prove that with specific keystrokes in any sentence, phrase or compound word - that is in the dictionary (Oxford or other wise) - is NOT eligible.
3) you'd have to have a double/triple blind test to prove that off the shelf BNIB Shipping models show the SAME results for a particular market against another BNIB model (of same model) shipping for another market shows the same results... if it didn't you'd have to come with a logical & scientifically proven way for why it didn't and why its different results are due to market segment.

I have never heard this word myself, but it is listed in the
Urban Dictionary. One of the meanings:
"An Eastern European Jew. The term is often interpreted as offensive, which is a major misconception. The word Yiddish is not offensive, so neither is Yid. The word Yid is used to differentiate between an Eastern European, Yiddish-speaking Jew and an Israeli, Hebrew-speaking Jew."

I think the hexdump shown in the first post does not show the complete list.
I suspect most phones with autocompletion/prediction of text has similar lists.

"A word Santa Clause says three times when he sees your wife, mother and sister together in the same room." (Urban Dictionary)

Hi all,
Although AbuBasim's definitions are indeed correct a lot depends on who and how the word is used. Yiddish is both a language and a culture whilst calling some one a Yid can be and usually is highly offencive as some one of the Jewish persuasion trust me calling some that with a few other insults is likely to cause physical violence and has done so in my youth. It still may do even now although to be honest it's been a very long time since any such instances. It's a bit like calling someone a Nigger but seeing as it appears to be a list of not allowed words that seems fine to me and a very sensible thing to have included IMO.

That's true. The Urban Dictionary lists three definitions for "yid". One of those are offensive.

But why is a separate list of 'not allowed words' required, if those don't exist in the database of available words ?

Because words you have typed gets added to future suggestions. (WM6 added the same future. In WM6 you can also clear the user-created list.) If these are found in the taboo list then these are not accepted to the user-created list.
