I don't know if it is faulty, because I had the same problem when i had my k750. I really think it has something to do with my settings and photography skills, or lack thereof.
But seriously, i goto a site like this:

And I see the pics, and all I can think is, why the hell cant I take something remotely similar to that?

im about to believe that the problem is your camera. get it replaced.
thinking deeper...... save a pic on your memory stick and save one on your phone's memory. then compare them.
