there's a few simple ways to ensure your system tuns efficiently as possible. Uninstall anything you don't need. Disable anything that runs in the background that you only use occasionally. If you need it, start it manually from the All Programs list WHEN you need it.
Run ONE AV, and ONE Firewall program. Disable EMAIL AV scanning (instead, just be careful when opening attachments). Don't run multiple background adware/malware scanners, don't run system monitoring software, or memory maximiser software or background ghostbackups or any other essentially useless software.
Infact the best way to make a system run better is to find as many things as possible NOT to run (rather than trying to find things to make it run faster) Just get rid of all the junk
Go through your windows services and google each one and disable any you don't need.
Download something like "hijackthis" and investigate all the startup items it finds and disable any you don't need.

might be worth running your anti-virus too, have you considered getting more RAM as XP will struggle with less than 512Mb. It's pretty damn cheap these days, so ya might want to get another stick...

Running AV is a given - you must run AV as the very first thing.
