Im not worried tbh, as long as some sort of fine is placed for having a cigarette in the car, lit or not.
Its the same concept as using a mobile phone so i dont know what the worry is all about, both cause distraction, both disallow the use of a second hand at the wheel (which means you have to be magic to changes the gear and steer with one hand [presuming you dont drive an automatic]), and also both cause great trouble in the car if they're dropped, one may cause a fire, both may cause a crash.

so going by your reasoning, i hope you dont have a phone in your car when driving even if you dont use it
and also if we are going on about distractions, why isnt sat nav banned, listening to the radio and even having passengers as they can all cause distractions
this country is a joke and I for one cant wait until i can move abroad
good point mutley and @ vein your not changing gear all the time are you? light it when your at steady speed/revs and you should be fine, although its not hard to take your steering hand off the wheel for a second to change gear now is it?

I frequently smoked whilst driving without any problems! It would only get a bit hairy if I dropped the fag whilst driving (Only ever did that once!).
You only ever have one hand off the wheel at once, and I managed to change gear - and even park without any problems whilst having a fag on the go!
Agreed Mutleyboy, this country is drowning under a sea of red tape, stupid and pointless legislation and and obsession with risk avoidance. I can certainly understand the flood of people who leave this country feeling very disillusioned.

Going by my reasoning I have a professional car kit installed into my car which I dont have to touch the phone at all and it means i keep my eyes on the road... if you were trying to implement the same thing for a cigarette im damned sure its near impossible.
Ok, the "lit or not" was a bit over opinionated but where I'm from, how I drive, changing gear is a necessity, what with small lanes, alot of roundabouts, junctions and narrow roads with cars parked in the way. That's alot of stopping and starting, its the fact someone has the time to flick the ash out the window aswell or lighting a fag during driving it just seems far too dangerous.
I do have a self professed smoke hate but considering my reasoning this would also be great for other, new or old drivers on the road too.

what a load of rubbish. been driving over 20 years without a ticket or accident (sportscars with manual transmissions) and I smoke. light up before go or when at cruising speed. as to mobile use bt headset with it no problem. looks like time to forget going back to uk with how theyre getting bad about stupid laws there. shame as I like uk but I hate stupidity and ignorance.

There's nothing wrong per se with maximising public safety Mweb, I think the (Probably a bit off topic now!

) debate is how far it has gone, and has the obsession with risk avoidance and health and safety gone too far, to the point where it's impacting on common sense and unnessecarily complicating or impeding people lives because it might save a life or two.
I know the next post will be 'if it saves a life it would be worth it' but bear in mind that accidents can and do happen and they are a part of life, and no amount of legislation, nannying or stupid rules will stop that
We seem to be headed towards a complete 'blame' culture where people want someone or something to blame for what would actually just be an accident where no one person, thing or organisation has any blame as such.

Couldn't have put it better myself.
Somebody mentioned that they have a professional hands-free kit for their phone? Well, sorry but under the same guidelines that have recently been added to the highway code you should not use that either.
It has nothing to do with taking your hands off the wheel, it's because they reckon that there should be no distractions whatsoever that could cause the driver to lose concentration. This includes talking to passengers, using hands-free phones, opening sweet wrappers, listening to music etc.
Will it save lives? Personally, I doubt it very much.
