its all a matter of what you have to pay for it...for aound 250 euros, the P990 is a good buy...more than that, is better to save for a P1

It is an excellent buy, especially at that price. The bugs have essentially been sorted out - get the latest firmware. And the RAM issue can be managed via Swiss Manager (there is a free version and a retail one).

get the p990i. i got one myself, and i think its a great buy for its price. i really like the wifi feature. i dont use for media player thou, but still i think its a great phone for its price. the swiss manager is really a great help in managing the ram, and i would recommend you to get it (the free version is good enough for me). the predictive texting is a great feature, especially on the flip open mode.

P990 is a great phone, I know how much joy it gave me. And for that price it is a good deal. From the other side P1 is far from merely P990 with more ram, it is improved in many areas but more expensive. So it depends on your pocket and actual needs.

It all boils down to expectation. If you expect all that can be expected of it, then you'll most definitely be happy. Truth is, I think you're gonna be happy with it with what you described, mainly because you're not expecting much (ie, you don't multitask which is pretty much the only real flaw of the P990), and the negative comments you hear which have been blown totally out of proportion would set your expectation to an all time low. When your expectation is low to start with, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what it's capable of. My P990 lost its camera when it got dipped in a pool 2 months ago. I can't live without camera on my phone so I bought another P990, simply because I stuck with touchscreen, serves the purpose of my primary home internet connection, with a download speed of about 50kb/s, not to mention it has one of the best 2mp cameras in the market, and the qwerty board is so convenient and fast for taking notes and points. It also makes waiting a pleasure with the movies you can view in landscape on such a large display which also enhances the vivid 3D games. And I love the fact that it's a normal phone with the flip closed, and doubles as a sophisticated computer with flip open. All that said, make sure you update to the latest firmware if you decide to buy it, and the only things that might annoy you would be:
1) Speed. This is one slow mutha. Expect the apps to open very slowly, but once it's open, it's fast. Unfortunately given its RAM shortage, you'd have to open the apps all the time (this is where P1 is a dream and why it's faster)
2) The fact that you'd have to reboot the phone about once in 2-3 days for optimal multitasking, because the available RAM beyond that is usually lower than you'd like for opening a few apps simulatneously, especially if you're a power user of its web app
3) The screen. While it is brilliant indoors, it's really hard for anything to be legible under direct sunlight.
These are general flaws it has, anything more can be accredited to your own preference. Aside from these points, AFAIK there is quite no other phone out there with its combination of specs

Excellent said! I agree and say: if you can get the p990 that low priced, go for it! And enjoy it!

By the way, nobody mentioned that so far, I even upgraded the battery to a p1 one, the BST-40 and its even greater!

Donīt forget also that the availability of (free) apps like Gdesk and Long Cuts made the P990 a much more versatile and powerfull machine
