Ask him if he dropped it in water, and tell him to be honest to you. If he did only ervice can help, and then I'm affraid it will cost more than it will taste.

If there is water damage, the phone is physically damaged. You can open it up if you want, but you really need to send it for a service. When it arrives they will inform you that you will be charged for the service because the water damage indicator will show.... It's probably a better bet just to buy a new phone.

@ahmed: the guys are definitely right... here's my share:
try to isolate your unit's problem by following ranjith's tip of trying a new battery and see if the problem still occurs. if it does, the other guys may be right that it could be a moisture problem. if it is indeed a moisture problem, you can try to "open" the unit, separate the back and front and the chassis and try "drying" it by any regular (hair) blow dryer. set the dryer to its lowest hot temp and do it is a swaying motion at least two feet away from the unit. do this at least twice for more or less a minute in intervals of 30 minutes. i have this before with my beloved k700i three years ago (drenched for some 15 minutes together with me in a sudden downpour!) and it worked! i am not guaranteeing you anything sure but at least you could try. just be cautious, ok? good luck...

I don't mean like full underwater resistance, but what about in rain downpours and things, do you have to watch out and take special care or are phones reasonably resistant to splashes of water?

They seem to be pretty resistant i reckon. My W810i had a short bath in water once while out at dinner with some mates. Someone spilled water on the table, and the water got under my phone (which was on the table), drenching the speaker, and the whole back.
I quickly took it into the toilet to use the hand dryer. 1.5yrs on and it's still functional
