I find it strange that a device with more capabilities (except the camera and 3G) like htc S710 is far cheaper than the P1.

Correction - Except:
- Camera (P1i has 2 cameras)
- 3G (UMTS)
- FM Radio with RDS

I don't know about you, but I think this HTC is old hardware repackaged.

I mean, no 3G ???
Nowadays no one even tries to browse the web with GPRS as the prices are proibitive and the performace is terrible.
No camera? If you don't want a camera, get a M600 not a P1.
No radio? What else is missing?

Have you ever thought how difficult/expensive is to pack all the P1 specs in a small and thin phone as the P1?
In the end most people are willing to pay extra for a phone like the P1, a phone that packs (almost) everything inside your shirt pocket.

[Edit]
About the price. My advice: Search better!
In my country I found a place that sells the P1 by less €90 than most shops do.

I used the i-mate jam for nearly 18 months and upgraded to the Htc Wizard six months ago. I changed platform from WM to UIQ four weeks ago for two major reasons:
My new UIQ device( SE W950)
is extremely light and slim.
It is the cheapest touchscreen smartphone with lots of memory to spare.
My observations:
WM UI is more organised and easier to use.
WM is more professional with more business features to get the job done. Email client is easier to set up and manage.
WM has far more freewares.
WM interfaces and syncs better with your PC.
With WM, RAM is not an issue.
?
WM freezes every other time so reset button is your familiar button.
Processor speed is slow in most WM5 devies, so no high encoded video playback for you.
Java programs run better on UIQ.
Opera browser in UIQ has more features than WM's IE.

I'd say at least 80% of WM6 applications are not usable without a stylus, while 80% of the applications on the UIQ are usable by using only your finger/nail.

The original post asked about "WM6 Standard", which is the less functional non-touchscreen version of Windows Mobile. It would make more sense to compare WM6 Standard with Nokia's S60.

Having been a user of both Windows Mobile 5 [not yet 6] and Symbian 9.1 w/ UIQ3 [M600 and P1], I thought I'd give my thorough opinion. I find the opposite of what a lot of the posts above say.

The windows mobile I used was on an HTC S series. Windows Mobile is pretty fast. You click on a menu, it's instant. You open mail, comes up pretty fast too. I always figure that if you're the type of person who actually needs a PDA, then you need the speed of it to be somewhat fast too. Lastly, speed is somewhat comparable to a cheap samsung phone.

What I use, and use heavily, is the P1i. I recently got it after the M600 [as a gift]. Having been the only two Symbian phones I've used, I'm not sure if what I'm about to say is strictly SonyEricsson or Symbian or UIQ. But there's quite a bit of lag in about everything you do. I understand that opening an application could take a few seconds [speed is comparable about identical in comparison to WM5]. Simply put, anything that ISN'T already loaded in RAM, will take some time to open. This includes the Main Menu. When you first turn on the phone, there's a bit of lag to open the Main Menu. There's more lag if you go to Control Panel. Same lag when you open the Contact List [only the first time since turning it on though]. More lag when you open Messaging. Further more, if you're planning on using the phone for messaging, it might drive you nuts. Although the messaging program is somewhat decent, ANY action you take with any part of any message, leads to this strange 'refresh'. Every SonyEricsson UIQ phone does this. For example, when you open messaging, and open an email, you read it, then press back [to see your inbox], you see the messages, then it scrolls to the top, then the screen refreshes [blinks as though reloading the list of messages] and comes back to the same viewing area you were in [like the 15th email for example]. I've seen this mentioned on so many forums. Anyway, that's just a tad of an inconvenience.

Where the real UIQ problems are, are the bugs. Every system has bugs. But only SonyEricsson gives you more than it fixes with each update. I don't think anyone can doubt that. My M600 was a horror story. Long ago, you'd click on the time-setter in the calendar, and it would go white, so you'd have to adjust the time blindly. Then came an update. It fixed the problem. But now, the alarm clock would ring, only sometimes. Long story short, they couldn't just fix the problem and leave it at that. In another firmware, the phone got slow, then fast, then they lowered the sound volume, then raised it high, then we had weird bugs coming up, etc.

I only found one error with WM5 [not much use on it]. It had to do with the redial call list. I find that of the programs that are available for UIQ, the big ones can have bugs every now and then. Some are amazingly well developed.

Now the flip-side. I'm a heavy web browser [no pun]. And I find that by far, the web is a LOT friendlier on UIQ. Especially since Opera Mobile is included. When I compared it to the Pocket IE on WM5, Pocket IE would stumble on many pages, some pages wouldn't work, and downloads would fail. If I remember correctly, IE didn't have tabs. Now this may be a whole different story with WM6, but it's just my experience with WM5. I'm a web-developer on the side. In terms of features, possibilities, it's UIQ hands down. Much support for it too. However, CORPORATE support, it's Windows Mobile. What do I mean by this? Well, if you look hard enough, you'll find software that'll do pretty much anything for UIQ. Everything from telling you when to change your car oil, to project managing, remote desktop to your office, RSS, watch DIVX/XVID movies, view/edit Office [which WM5 let you view only, unless you pay] and the list goes on.

But, when you go to skype.com's mobile software, there's support for Windows Mobile only. This happens a LOT you'll find. On the other hand, you can always use Fring and iSkoot on UIQ. But sometimes, it's just not the same as the official version.

Summary:
Speed: WM
Features: UIQ
Ease: WM5 [simple, sometimes, sometimes lacking] UIQ has a hierarchy of organization, while WM5 it's all just...well, there on one page.
Options [calling cards, standby screen, etc]: UIQ
On the go: UIQ
Screen Colours: UIQ
Ability to change to landscape more [flipping to the side like the iPhone]: UIQ
Looks and shapes like a phone: UIQ
Stability: WM
Bugs: UIQ

Overall, if I was to choose a new phone, I'd mostly be looking for UIQ over WM, unless WM6 has something great to offer. Despite all the bugs, problems, slow downs, and the fact that I had to restart my P1 5 times a day this week, I'm still a UIQ person. On the other hand, Nokia, from what I hear has Symbian, no UIQ but very stable.

ugh, the choices. lol,

well I'm using the P1 now and i'm trying the firmware but i think i'll have to stick with it. WM hasn't done it for me.

but personally, i think it really specifically depends on what you plan to do with the phone. so yes, do tell

Assuming that UIQ 3 and WM6 have same number of applications. UIQ 3 beats WM6 in all aspects, first it doesn't require too much processing speed as opposed to those nasty bricky WM6 TS Devices. another was that the reason why WM6 sync better to a PC is because only if you use Windows in your PC! aside from that UIQ 3 has more logical interface and usability is far superior than WM. and with Microsoft's past issues with Java Company they only offer runtime environment to be able to run java programs in it. compared to UIQ which has far more capability with it's wide array of Java APIs bundled under the UIQ 3 Core system aside from it's own Symbian APIs.

Ha. My exact feelings on WIFI and networks in general are not repeatable in a public forum such as this. How about "WIFI is a *&^%$£"!!$"£%!!! load of !"!!"^^%$$^&**&%$£^%&^%*** that nobody actually understands?"

On the subject of WM6 versus UIQ i'd say both have merits and both have their problems. Personally I'm more in favour of UIQ over both s60 and WM - although its current incarnation is something of a pig to code for. The basics are there for UIQ to really develop into something special - the question is if the new touchscreen s60 devices that are on the way will work as well as UIQ, I suspect the Nokia have really stolen a march on both Microsoft and SE with the development of its interface being able to actually touch the controls directly may well lead to UIQ being the next PALMOS i'm afraid.

How hard is it to connect to a wifi-spot? I don't mind being tedious afterall tedious just breeds familiarity. Does it take a long time to find the connection?
