So fa = "field average". Thanks. trouble is, I don't know what "field average" means in the smartphone context. Neither apparently do the online references google, chambers, merriam-webster, ask.com, wikipedida or wiktionary.

For the benefit of us ignoramuses, could you please explain in a bit more detail?

SE knew this would happen because they are beginning to sell more low-end devices and few high-end. i do hope that they from now on will make more high-end phones

The average price for SE phones has dropped from around 145 EUR last year to 118 EUR this year as a consequence of selling more low and mid end phones. The avarage price is still one of the best on the market. Nokia for instance reported an average price of 90 EUR for their phones last quarter, but due to an extreme large sales volumes they can compesate for the lower average price.

If I remember correctly, while being on the forth place market share wise, they are (or at least have been up to recently) on second place profit wise e.g. volume wise they sell less than e.g. Samsung, but they earn more money.

OK. So i guess most people would willingly agree to a 10% decrease in wages if employed or sale prices if operating a business! To many business, that's in the region of gross margin. And how many employees have that much to save?

SE won't be cutting anyone's wages!!!! It's a drop in profits only, not a fall to unprofitibility.

Hi Max Wedge,

You know what the more you post the less sustainable and weaker your arguments become, when it comes to SE you are blind and always have an answer as to why it is always a good thing for SE. For absolutely ages now you kept banging on how moving to more mid to low end devices was such a good and clever thing for SE to be doing as they could then use this increased market share and profit to invest in high spec devices once again.

Now suddenly they announce a 10% drop in profits and it's to be expected and of course can't possibly be a bad thing for SE can it? as lets face in your eyes nothing ever is.

As to this statement to justify the fall

"the fall in profit is more likely due to an investment in assembly line, plant and development that allowed the masses of new models to be produced. It will pay itself off ten times over in the next 1-2 years."

Would you care to explain this truly insightful observation and just what you base it on as you seem to have changed your tune all of a sudden and what exactly is so new or different that requires all this new work after all a candy bar is a candy bar and you can't really claim SE is putting lots of new tech in many of it's devices and slight cosmetic changes doesn't require retooling a whole plant either.

Of course this drop in profits is bad and proves just shifting more units in the low to mid end generates far less profit than selling premium devices with premium prices and larger profits.

I haven't noticed Nokia profits decreasing and you complain they have even more low to mid end devices but what they do have is a much higher amount of both premium Multimedia and Buisness smart phones. That obviously due to their prices generate more profit and this is what maintains there profitability not the bread and butter low to mid end with much lower selling prices and profit.

Marc
