The S60 web browser is based on Apple's open source project webkit. And indeed Safari is also based on this. Also the recently announced Google Android will feature a web browser based on webkit.

With the growing popularity of webkit on mobile devices I was hoping to see a port of webkit for UIQ.
Has anyone ever heard of such a project?

This is just me... long time Mac user... and I hate Safari... I really can't stand using it. I feel like I'm running IE 1.0. I know a lot of people like it... I'm not one of them. I prefer FF, or even Camino.

I'm not saying we should have safari, just a web browser using webkit.
It's small and renders very fast, what's wrong with that!?
There has been quite a lot of sites putting up specialized iphone pages.
With a webkit browser these should render the same on UIQ.

Also see Om Malik's post:
http://gigaom.com/2007/11/13/webkit/

"The growing popularity of WebKit, according to some of my browser guru sources, is due to the fact that it’s easier to code for compared with other browser engines. It also has a well-organized and smaller code base, which is easier to manage. Finally, it is quite fast and renders faster, which makes it attractive to developers.

More importantly, however, WebKit has a smaller footprint, which means it has less memory and CPU requirements and as such, is ideal for the mobile environments. Apple’s (and now Google’s) mobile ambitions have prompted the company to devote a lot of resources to WebKit, turning it into a viable mobile platform. In comparison, IE Challenger, Firefox and its Gecko engine are only getting started in their mobile efforts. They’ll have to cover a lot of ground before they even catch up with WebKit."

To be honest, after a year with P990,
I find Opera built in as a great browser.
And it's not true that OperaMini4 takes more RAM than the built in, it takes much less.
But I don't see any sense of porting S60 browser to UiQ3, since both browsers are good.
What is also great in Opera is amazing zooming level and easynes of this setting.
Opera Mini 4, although great, has disadvantages:
1. Horribly slow saving bookmarks
2. Just one page open
3. Sometimes stability problems.
The good is that it works fast also with GPRS.
PC Look is awesome.
But working with Zoom in Opera 8.65 is even more effective!!

I don´t agree:

- The s60 browser is very good, and better than Opera 8.65 in many things. Opera mobile 9 might change that, but we simply don´t know when it will be out and if we will get it for free

- A native browser is always better than a java browser

- There is no really open source browser for UIQ3

- More alternatives is always better

So, kudos for the Bergamot project guys, hope they get on it quickly

@tesssst
Well, don't call me uneducated if you don't know what you talk about.
Just go to status of your phone after using built in Opera and do the same after using Opera Mini.
Built in Opera can take even 9MB if most of cache is used or a lot of data has been sent.
Opera Mini takes less.
Don't offend me.
