If you are on o2, the easest way to check to see if you have a 3g sim card is to look at the sim number
At the back it norm says 3GD (Or something like that). This means that the card is a 3g card.
If you are on the following networks:
Voda, T-Mobile, Virgin. If you have had the sim card in the last 5-7 years, your sim card is already 3g, however it may just need to be activated. (Just contact your network)
If you are on O2, Orange and if you purchased your first phone that was a normal GSM phon (No 3g or video calling) You need to obtain a new 3g card.
For o2, If you are on either contract and PAYG and purchased a new handset from them, then the phone box should have a new sim card installed (O2 can swap your details over from one to the other)
You can call into a local shop or phone the network. The cards are free.
If you are on Orange If you upgraded on Contract/PAYG and purchased the phone from Orange, then you will get a new sim card in the box and you need just to ask orange to swap over the details. If you are on contract on and purhased a non 3g phone, then you need to wait for your upgrade due date and purchase a orange 3g phone (This is how they used to do it).
If you are on PAYG and just want to upgrade to a 3g sim, I beleive that they cost £5 (They used to may be free now?) from a Orange shop. However you may have to pressure the orange shop as some dont like to sell them to you with out a orange phone (I beleive)
