I drained mine completely first and then leave it to charge overnight.

Here is a 30 page thread on Tips to care for your battery

well when i first turned it on it had 18% battery..obviously they let you fiddle with it
..id say play with it tell its totally drained out and then let it charge to 100%
and do this 3 times or so
so charge to max then discharge it
then charge it again and discharge it once more and fully recharge for the third time:)

... and dont forget, that the battery reaches its best performance between after the first 2 weeks and 2 monthes. it takes time, so dont be afraid, if at the first time u dont have so long standby time, it will be increased with the time as mentioned above

first charge is just like others, in new batteries it's not necessary to charge it for 6 or 12 hours.

Over night will be okay, but I want to tell a bit of a horror story about first time charging my K550. Because K550 uses the same battery as my late M600, I used the M600 battery on the K550 on the first day I bought the phone. At night, I put the K550 battery inside the M600 and leave it overnight... The following morning, I took the K550 battery from the M600 and install it on the K550.

Lo and behold... A serious error warning is shown when I switched on the phone. The internal speaker is dead although the system running just fine, but the battery is running ridiculously hot. However, after a few hours letting the battery to cool, I put it back in the K550 and turn it on... And it ran just fine.

Because I'm afraid had done something internally damaging, I sold the phone and buy a new one... I just love the phone... After which, I charge the phone with its battery overnight and no problem.

The moral of the story... Don't be like me.
