Do these devices have a music player & GPS reciever built in? what about handwriting recognition?
They come with Windows Media Player built in, together with an HTC "audio manager" to help organise your tracks. I haven't been able to try all that out yet, as I had a problem with my memory card (nothing to do with the Tytn).
GPS is indeed built in, the phone comes with a fully functioning "taster" edition of TomTom on disc which you can install, along with one free map (if you want more you have to pay). You can of course install any other WM6 compatible sat nav package, or use freebies like Google Maps or Windows Live Search which work with the GPS and download maps over the air.
Handwriting recognition? It has three different systems built in - "block recogniser" which is a bit like Palm's graffitti I think, "letter recogniser" which I get along with best, and which seems very similar to the system in UIQ phones, and "transcriber", which tries to interpret any text you scribble on the screen. Just pick the one that suits you best
There's also an on-screen qwerty, the slide out physical qwerty of course, a symbol pad, and any number of third party alternatives you can install (many of them free).

IMO, the three things that go against most WM devices are:
1)The UI. Windows mobile devices have the worst UI possible on almost any mobile OS
2) Slide out keypads are very bad for quick messaging. I hate having to slide out a keypad and turn the phone to type out a message.
3)The WM phones with the specs I like are all too huge!
Personally my perfect phone would be the kaiser II specs with a UIQ3 interface and a p1i body

1) this is a matter of taste. I like the UI on my P1 and on WM and have no problem with either. WM is logical, it just seems worse because there is more you can do but when you set the pattern of normal use its quick and easy, and... customisable.
2) It takes a fraction of a second to slide the keyboard out on the TyTN II and this turns the device on and puts it in landscape mode. All you have to do is click the dedicated key for messaging and you're away.
3) TyTN II is smaller than P990 and there isn't actually a great difference with the P1 (I have TyTN II and P1... TyTN II is just a bit thicker by a few mm, thats all)

I agree with Masseur on the UI, it's all a matter of taste, and to try and pin WM down as the "worst ever" is a bit melodramatic. It's actually quite intuitive, and I've had no problem picking it up after a total of four years using UIQ devices exclusively. To be honest, in many ways it's quite similar, certainly on the Tytn - complete with jog wheel and OK button (which works in a similar way to the back button) right where you'd expect to find them on an SE.
WM is also very customisable, so if there are aspects of the UI you don't like, they're probably easier to change than on a comparable UIQ or S60 phone.
As for the keyboard, well I'm a big fan of the M600/P1 style keyboard, but I'm very happy with the Tytn's slide out effort too. It takes no time at all to switch to it, in the middle of messaging or anything else.

yeah like you said its all a matter of preference
1)Yeah like all systems you get used to it and I have no problem using it, but its just really bad in following most HCI conventions.
2)It takes a second, but i do a lot of messaging at random intervals and to flip the phone on its side, slide out the keypad and then start messaging is a waste of actions to me. But I'm one of those people who likes all the functionality immediately available, hence why I dont like sliders and a flips.
3)Its the thickness I don't like. It just doesnt fit nicely in my pocket.

actually you can slide and rotate in the same action you do to bring it from your pocket to your typing position

Unilke the JasJar, Jam, k-JAM and TyTN before it, the TyTN II is the first I am very comfortable with in my trouser pocket, or my jack inside pocket. Previously I always used the case that i-mate and HTC supply with these.

i disagree....
the HTC is a super device it's downside is it runs on Windows Mobile ..... that's the main issue.
i've owned some htc and other WM devices, i installed a linux version on it.
no trouble at all, no freeze, no resets nothing.
but when i boot WM again, the pain starts

I can't help thinking that there's just something in the name "Windows" that makes people want to knock it
In truth, it's a perfectly stable and reliable OS in my experience so far. I've been a big fan of Symbian since my first Psion Revo, but I have to admit this is just as good, if not better.

It's an OK OS, and many mac users had WM devices till iphone, and we all know how a mac user can be demanding.
That said, WM is a PDA oriented os, with a telephony stack and you notice that in usage imho.
By the way, may someone explain me how to handle connection a la UIQ3 using a WM device ? Comm manager doesn't suit me (it's good to manage hardware not connections) and i really lacked the priority profiles found on uiq3 (only app i found managed priorities over gsm connections, no wifi, nor bluetooth).
I'm a definite geek (i took months of vacancy to play with pdas, etc, tried almost anything possible on it) and learnt also from myself, when i decided to ship back the tytn ; the device still amazed me, the FF is ok (too heavy, and you'll notice it it u had p990 or p1 before) but that's just not what I need.
i'd have loved it as a pda replacement for my ux50 (marvelous clie i dropped when got the p990), but times are that u don't have a phone and a pda anymore, then i choose p990 over Kaiser !
EDIT :
PLZ don't make this topic a classic and cheap debate WM vs the rest of the world, it's all down to personnal taste, and i'd expect you to share why your device suits YOU better than another. Just your taste, nor your judgement
