specially if you are using a P1 or W960, where RAM is not an issue...

Yeah. ..what happens when it does run out of memory, anyway..? Does the phone just close the first program on the list? Will running programs get into trouble?

other day i made a test...the phone managed to run almost all the apps i had installed at the same time, and did not close any...i reached 1% left of RAM...i had something like 35 apps running at same time...then it simply refused to open more

I've set Swiss Manager to close the foreground program when I long tap on the swiss manager status icon.

..personally, I think it's a pretty elegant solution. Most programs that use large chunks of memory, or need exclusive priority for a while, like games - have an exit- button. The rest you don't really need to close, and you'll save battery and time if you leave the programs open. Without things slowing down, and so on (generally, anyway).
..Not like it is on s60 or WM, but.. in my opinion, that's not really a bad thing.
i agree 100% with this but there are some people who prefer closing all programs. personally, the only apps i leave running are messaging, contacts, IM+ and opera mini.

You can also set SMP to cleanup on idle or when flip is closed (for P990). This works quite good for me, unless I have marked an application as excluded from cleanup, SMP eventually closes that program after a while.

If I recall correctly, I think that I remember reading that the convention for UIQ3 interface/application design is that you should not provide the user with an explicit means to exit the program (from within the program). I.e, they promote just using the "back button" and letting the operating system take care of when applications should be closed.
Just thought that it was kind of interesting when I read that... (correct me if I read it wrong)...

I agree that this method of keeping apps open instead of closing them is the 'better' way to do it. It's the way forward - why keep restarting apps when you can resume them at any time from where you left them.? As long as the phone can handle it, and the P1i seems to be able to fine, then it's all good!
However, I too want to close apps sometimes for battery reasons or for tidyness, so I've changed the function of the internet '@' key on the side of the phone to Task Manager (Control Panel > Device > Shortcut button). This makes it really easy to close programs without needing the pen or fingertips, woo!

That were in fact the guidelines of UIQ 2, but I'm not sure if it still stands in UIQ 3.
