Yup, that's annoying I must say. I got used to turn off my phone during night, and that used to give me a day and a half more on a phone that used to make 2-3 days on a charge (Motorola). And that is 50% increase in battery life, which is not "just a notch".
If I could turn off my cell at 11PM and have it wake me up at 6:30AM, that would give me 7,5 hrs of stand-by more per day. Now I make 4-5 days on a charge, I guess this way I could make a whole week. Not to mention battery's life cycle of approx. 2000 charging cycles (most of todays batteries last that long before their life shortens too much for them to be comfortable to use).

It makes perfect sense, and it's been this way since the P800 in 2002. In SE's hardware platform for its Symbian phones, there is no timer running when the phone is off, it's just off. Full stop. Therefore, the alarm programme cannot run.
In the more basic phones, the hardware design is totally different, and includes a watchdog which ticks along even when the phone is "off", allowing it to check for alarms and power up when necessary. The UIQ phones don't have that, simple as.
Nokia's later S60 phones may well have it, but SE's don't. See how this is working?
Honestly, this has to be one of the most asked questions in this forum, it's been asked about the P800, the P900, P910, M600i, P990, W950, P1, and now the W960 no doubt - but the answer's always the same! No alarms when it's turned off!
It's really no great hardship, if you are one of these weirdos who insists on turning their phone off all the time, just get in the habit of using flight mode instead. Same difference.
You know what else? If you put any of these phones on silent, the alarms won't make a noise! Amazing isn't it! Silent means the phone is silent! That also seems to confuse a lot of people...

There obviously is something ticking over, how else would the clock keep time. Surely something could reasonably easily be integrated to switch the phone on (to the pre-fully booted, charging state say 30 seconds before an alarm or other event is due) and then have Symbian itself ring the actual alarm?
The phone could say, tell the hardware that it wishes to set the next automatically triggered power-up just before power off. After the alarm has rung, the phone could re-set this flag and time for the next event, and shut itself off again.
I guess the newer Symbian Nokia's do something like this anyway.

Well, on my Z800 the phone is NOT switched on, BUT the alarm rings anyways. You can snooze and/or turn it off, however the phone still is OFF.
Anyways, why would one need that really.... do those people have digital alarm clocks and after setting an alarm turn the alarm clock off???
Come on there are more important things and issues that need attention

Oh, no. This is proof SE makes crap phones, and should be harped on for months until SE wises up and respects their customers - and makes them an alarm clock! Really, paying 400 € and NOT GETTING AN ALARM CLOCK THAT WORKS! SE stinks! And nokia doesn't, because they HAVE an alarm clock! HAHA!
But yeah, it could be implemented with an electronic switch the same way as the power- button. Only the switch would be triggered by some counter. (..But it would need extra wiring, switches and modules).

I've TRIED setting the alarm ONCE with my P990i . . . turned the fone OFF overnight and did NOT alarm @ 1 am

I'm NOT sure though if I have configured something wrong with the settings
