Vince, just because the I phone is a first attempt doesnt give reason for its extravagant cost. Make it free on normal £35 and up tariffs and no one would be complaining. The complaints are being made because it is an excessive overcharge for an already out of date phone. And no I dont really care about its OS and UI when the features cant back up a potentially great piece of hardware.

i think the second/third generation will be allot more successful, remember the first generation ipod who one earth though people would splash out on such a expensive device to listen to music when Walkman's cd players and mini discs had the crown, look at todays market ipod rules the market.

even tho there is a lack of sales in the uk market there still prob making a profit overall, i.e many devices such at the first generation xbox made a loss didnt

I think that's part of where it's all going wrong at the moment - Apple would love people to see the Iphone as the genre-defining Ipod of the mobile world, and that's what most of the marketing (and pricing) is geared around, but in truth it's just nonsense - the two markets couldn't be more different. When the Ipod was launched, the concept of a carrying around a collection of MP3's rather than a tape deck or CD walkman was still unusual, pioneered only by a few faltering startups, and actually being able to legally buy music that way was also a new idea. Apple were able to come in with the Ipod, make it seem sexy and desirable, and basically create the whole market.

Mobile phones? Even sexy, internet browsing, touchscreen phones? It's been done! The market is already established and very mature, especially in Europe, and no amount of hype can hide that. Unlike the Ipod, the Iphone cannot define its market, it can only compete within that already existing.

Imo the price with significantly drop in generations to come once they lower the cost to themselves they can pass on the discounts to customers like they done with the ipod.

the prices is high because in their eyes its a new very innovative product, the iphone doesn't have many phone functions like a smart phone but these can be solved with software update but even if they don't they do have basic phone functions of simplicity for most users, come back to the ipod it a good and reasonable price but it doesn't do as much as other competitors such as the creative range which has radio and divx playback built in, but still i bought a ipod for the convince as all my music is in itunes on my imac and pc and i assume it the same for millions of others due to sales of ipod. this generation of ipod classic is very low compared to competitors a 80gb video ipod for £159 originally the third generation was £219 for 20gb.

if they sold a sim free iphone at slight higher prices than the ipod touch sales would be enormous, but this would screw up their ipod sales.
