No. It appears
UIQ owns the Opera builds. So whether the upgrades are available or not for various UIQ versions depends on UIQ tech.
..It probably means that therefore it is up to SE if the upgrades are available - either as separate upgrades, or as firmware- upgrades through sub- versions of UIQ. And imo, either of these should not be out of the question, simply because we're not talking about leaps in hardware- configurations between the versions here. And quite likely no impossibly great problems when it comes to migrating from one subversion to the next.
Not to mention that it would extend the life of uiq- units considerably, and make developing for the units much more attractive. (imo, anyway.)

@Nipsen
But that's the problem SE and UIQ don't won't to prolong the life span of their devices they want you to buy the new device as soon as it's released, they don't make money any other way.
Which was proved IMO by the fact that although it appears it was going to be possible to give the original UIQ3 the UI as found in the P1 and now W960 they didn't want to they wanted their users to buy a P1.

ok, well it amounts to the same thing I guess - SE (or UIQ) pay for the thing, and they get to decide what to do with it.
Is there a business case for releasing it to older handsets, including handsets that are declared 'end of line'? Are SE prepared to provide ongoing support for this new functionality on those older devices, and furnish them with the inevitable further patches and fixes, including (potentialy) dealing with critical security issues on this untried browser? are they ready to finance renewed support of phones like the P990 & M600i years into the future, so that those customers can benefit from software they were never promised, and have less reason to upgrade their handsets with phones like the P5i whose projected sales probably part-funded the development of Opera 9? we'll just have to wait and see!

What, isn't Safari the best browser in the world?

Well.. in this case they would be actively preventing a product from being available on their flagship phones.. I'm not an economist, but that doesn't strike me as a fantastically clever idea.

..Thing is, it doesn't appear to be hardware this time. With svg tiny support on UIQ3.1, like on the Z8, there's a possibility for flash- lite, and very likely it's the lack of this that prevents optimised rendering Opera9 is using for various tricks.
So - would an upgrade for the existing phones make it less likely that people would want to buy the new phone. When you have 15% of the marketshare, you can't think like that.

I doubt they would want to take the risk and mess up on the stability of the current firmwares.

Well, they have absolutely no support now, either, so they couldn't lose much by trying. Hell, they might even get happier customers.
