Ah yeah. But it somewhat depends on the critic or reviewer too as some are biased and some just don't know what they're listening for! Sometimes they do tests using some kind of fancy device though... I'd trust that.
Just checked the Sony NZ site and did a comparison of the two models. There doesn't seem to be any difference in sound quality. The only real difference I see is that the more expensive has the better headphones (which does make all the difference if you don't upgrade like I have).

oh, with your model, the difference between the 16 series and the 17 series, is the 17 comes in bigger capacities, and also, the 17 series has noise cancelling built in, yours does not!

most noticeable advantage of Sony Players vs IPODs were the mere fact that the sound through bass and treble are well balanced(if you dont use sony earphones) and the instruments are well rendered. in fact it sounds like i'm in the front of the actual singer!

Yeah and on the new Sonys it has settings where you can change the sound to sound like you're at a live gig or in the studio. It actually works too...
I know, its just a gimmick though.

However, the answer is not just in the bundled earphones, although those that come with the A8XX are indeed superior. From my understanding, the A8XX series are produced by Sony, while the S6XX series are actually made by an OEM. I'm not sure how true that is, and in any case, the "best sound quality" is the one that you like best, not what someone else claims is the best.
