well that's just stupid, and that research has to be flawed. You can't tell me that I'm more dangerous while using a mobile phone with a handsfree, while some idiot next to me with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 is less dangerous

Max - maybe you personally are not - but research has long shown that conversations to someone outside the vehicle are VERY distracting - infact the research done in Australia I think, shows that hands free calls are just as dangerous as holding the phone in hand - the UK government didn't include handsfree as 'it would be too difficult to implement' - more likely because the politicians wanted to be able to use their own phones whilst driving

I know what they mean when they say that, I use mine handsfree but I do notice that when I've ended the call I suddenly feel like I really haven't been paying attention to the road at all, because I've been concentrating on the phone conversation.

I suggest you DON'T drive and talk if that is the case. I'm aware of the road conditions the whole time I'm on the phone. If I wasn't I wouldn't drive while talking on the phone. Infact if you can't talk on the phone and drive I wouldn't expect you could even talk to a passenger while driving - I see no difference.

The reason most of us can drive and talk is this little thing called multi-tasking, something humans are generally very good at.

Ok, perhaps what I said was a slight exaguration, anyone whos seen most of my posts will see that

Of course I'm paying attention to the road, I'd crash into everything infront of me otherwise. I just occasionally feel, much like if I was talking to a passenger etc, that it's not 100% of my mind just soley on the road. I've been driving long enough for it be second nature, ie do it without thinking, but I'm still perfectly aware of the road, my surroundings and any hazards thank you very much.

@Daedalus85

I know exactly what you mean. Its impossible to give 100% attention to both the road and the conversation - your attention is always divided between the two.

My wish is that such rules be enforced daily. Cellphones have the most high death rate after HIV/AIDS. Imagine dying for a call from someone who only wants say hi!

I'm curious...how can they enforce this law? They can't monitor every vehicle on the road.

Anyway, everyone I know uses the cell while driving.

There's this little thing, called the police

Any just because everyone else does it, doesn't make it right, it makes them really, really stupid.

It's EXACTLY the same as drink-driving...

Only a few years ago many lads considered they were expert drivers after quite a few pints... perhaps evn better than when not having had a drink - but it is proven that reaction times are slowed and ability is decreased. If you drink and drive mostly you are OK... it's when that unexpected thing happens - a small child runs out - some other road user makes a mistake or unexpected manouver - normally you would cope and avoid them... In this instance your reactions are too slow - you KILL someone - never meant to - but there is a family with a loved one missing

EXACTLY the same on a mobile phone... you can get intoi a heated discussion with someone who is not there... concentration lapses... another road user makes a mistake - your usual lightening reactions are not quite up to scratch... you colide... they are injured badly... it's not your fault - they made the mistake... BUT you know that if you had been concentrating on the road better you would have avoided that accident!

AND now if you are seen to be using a mobile phone and involved in an accident it will be a significant factor in atributing blame! - they will even check your phone records to see if you were on the phone at the time - it's not rocket science...

There are also traffic cameras which record the street scenes - you can be identified from these...

BUT - it's a free world - your choice

If you say you are then I believe you, in fact that is what I'm trying to say - that you can quite safely drive and use a mobile phone (with a headset) without impairing your driving ability.

Many things can distract you while driving: a pretty girl walking the street, billboards, other accidents on the road (!), talking to a passenger, listening to talkshow on the radio, watching out for suicidal pedestrians and cyclists etc etc. Many things out there will distract you from the main task of driving and I would think anyone who can't drive and navigate these kinds of obstacles shouldn't be driving in the first place. I don't think we achieve anything by penalising mobile phone users. It's drivers who can't seem to concentrate properly when distracted who should be penalised not mobile phone users per se.

In other words why aren't the police out there pulling over any driver who exhibits unpredicatable behaviour, instead of picking on one group of people ie: mobile phone users, but then not doing anything at all about all the other idiot drivers out there?

I tell you in most of the near accidents I've had, where I've had to swerve or take evasive action due to some idiot who is not paying attention, it's rare that they are using a mobile phone. More often than not they just simply aren't paying attention. I've been forced of the road before by people who didn't bother to check their side view mirrors, they weren't on the phone they were just BAD drivers. Meanwhile, I'm forced off the road while some cop is pulling over a perfectly safe driver just because they were using a mobile phone?

It's like the adage guns don't kill people, people kill people. It's exactly the same on the road. Cars are a weapon in the hands of idiots, regardless of whether they are using a mobile phone or not.
