Yes, the screen is lit...but the OS still uses less power, as it knows every pixel underneath the flip is static(uncoloured, unchanging) - unless the flip is opened, of course......
I agree with points 1) and 3) whole heartedly,
mode......
...unfortunately, as
Dogmann points out(thanks Marc), it seems SE have decided the flip should go(obviously too much effort to keep developing UIQ like this...even though SE could EASILY have made ALL apps workable in EITHER FO or FC mode(it really isn't THAT hard if you know the OS), like Nokia's E90...they've decided to drop the whole idea instead(because everyone wants a slider, like N95?? Ok...) - well done

)......
...which leaves the greatly ergonomic P1/W960(one handed use?? Right...)...which is also why I, like
makbil, still keep my P990 round my neck like a lodestone...it's quite possibly, despite it's shortcomings, the LAST 'true'(going by SEs original moniker of 'Phone-PDA') P-series we'll ever see...more's the pity......

mode and others
Absolutely agree with you. What I have seen of the P5 concepts as a slider doesn't interest me at all.
Although I'm much happier with the P1 performance in terms of it's multitasking, and I've gotten used to the qwerty keypad, I still prefer the flip style of the P990 and predecessors.
(My decision to go with the P1 was based purely on the need for more RAM, which won by a slim margin over ergonomics.)

I'm just going to say one little thing about this topic.
I like the flip on P9XX series but I have to admit with flip the phone seems ugly and cheap. On the other hand P1i seems quite stylish.
I think

made its point here.

wants the customers who buys nokia or other products just for their style and I think that was a brilliant move.
With P1i, everybody gets amazed with its design and features. But with P9XX, they only see the phone as another blackberry or PDA copy.
So P1i rules and I hope

bring something like sealover designs
Cheers...

So it's fashion vs. function then.. I've never been much for fashion and it's too bad that some functionality will have to be sacrificed for the sake of fashion.
As @Aware has pointed out, a new breed of flipless designs will be PDA-phones rather than the Phone-PDA's that the P9xx series has been all about, a different concept all together...

I think both concepts are (PDA-phone and phone-PDA) has thier own customer profiles.
Probably you are right about at least one UIQ should have a flip desing. But as you know that segment became very competitive in last few years.

is definitely struggling coping up with it. So then they have to focus on one of the PDA-phone or phone-PDA segments. And I'm sure that phone-PDA's should have a great fashionable design with all the techological features.
I don't know right now but when P9XX series were published

had sale problems whereas nokia was gaining more and more.
IMO firstly,

should impress people with its phone-PDA's. People will buy it because of their desing, because of features that come with; than they will love PDA features among with phone features.
After the phone-PDA brand recognition than

should move to the PDA-phone designs. And it seems like

is well aware of the situation.
Oww, I've talked to much (rubbish)

And I must say, that I'm very open to a new solutions by SE.
Of course in the end practical reasons will win, but I want to experience new.
I don't think they'll forget about practicality. But it may be different than before. I don't see a reason to stick to one solution.
It's very interesting indeed to see finally what they prepare.

Well, I've always maintained I've been waiting for SE to surprise me because I've been unimpressed for a while now, so it's either bring me one big fat surprise or bring back the flip. Not having my hopes up though

Even though it was bulkier, I found the srgonomics of the p990 way better than the P1. Like the earlier poster, I upgraded for more RAM and stability.
I thought it was a bad idea to sacrifice the screen for the keyboard howerver, and wish they'd kept the design similar to the P910. This, IMO, gave the best flexability, whereby someone who wanted a full touchscreen PDA could remove the flip - taking the qwerty keyboard with it.

No doubt,
plus P990 has also Lock Key, very usable,
And one hand operation is really good in P990, bigger screen....

Let's not forget the 5-way jog dial on the P900/910. I would have loved to see it on the P990. I've had a P900 for over 4 years now and mechanically the 5-way jog dial is still good, so downgrading that probably wasn't a reliability issue. I know that there is a dedicated return button on the P990 but it's much easier to use the jog dial without having to shift the phone in your hand.
