sony earphones only really cancels about 10 - 11db and senheisser is at 11 - 15 which is quite noticeable.
The thing is with active noice canceling you'll always hear a hiss, that hiss is the negative wave of the wave being inputted to your ears so the device itself tends to be bulky (like an inline remote units). And they do work however you hear the hiss, If you go with shure e2c's or above you are able to cancel out noise of up to 28 - 29db plus they fit better.
The down side of e2c's and any other single driver units is that they lack in bass, the boomy sony bass as we know today. For dual armature units you'll have to pay in excess of around £120 to get ultimate ears Super fi 5 or £200+ for shure SE420.
I rather spend the money on quality earphones, and probably amp too! to protect my ears, upping the volume to 200% is going to improve the volume output but at the expense of your health. Premature hearing loss.
