"Problem: My Ir adapter (USB-IRdA) works perfectly well with my PDAs, Laptops, and the t68i. but for some unknown reason, it doesn't like Nokia phones at all. It would detect the phone, the moment a transfer starts, the phone disconnects and such. Anyone else faced such a problem?"

well, not a similar problem, just know that 7650 don't like IPaqs... and probably, couldn't send or recieve (don't remember which) pictures from it...

The T68i works with IR\s connection of a pc like an another pc. Where as Nokia's IR needs a program to be able to send or recieve pics.

Try for example to snd a business card from a nokia to the IR of a pc and it will recieve it, and vice versa. But for pics and mlodies, apparntly Nokia does not send it as a normal file, but it converts it to somthing and thn it is converted back using that program and vice versa.
And my comparison is based on a 7210 sinse i know atleast 3 people who hav them.

With a tiny free app, you can use animated gifs with the 7650. No problem. It is so wrong to compare the t68i and 7650. The 7650 wins in every aspect. I have both.

its like david and goliath...7650 is big and t68 is small but for me smarter when it comes to mms...no addtional app to use. i have both too. for me t68 still has advantages for user like me.

Frankly, comparing phones to each other is finicky business. The mobile companies don't openly contest their phone models against each other, so why should we?

It is, definitely, unfair to compare the Nokia 7650 to the Sony Ericsson T68i (former Ericsson T68m). Just look at the dates, they were conceived and manufactured so far apart from each other (in chronological terms).

I didn't know Nokia marketed the 7650 as a 'smart' phone, but imho, what's smart depends on who the person is. A teenager who likes to go clubbing would think that polyphonic ringtones, colours, changeable colours are real smart and trendy, while a high-flying executive would like the classic keypads and colours, smaller size, connectivity functions (infrared/bluetooth for syncing with his laptop and palm/ppc, WAP/GPRS for mobile surfing), subtlelity (is there such a word) in small form factors, long lasting battery life. It really depends on what the phone is used for.

I read the news (somewhere, i forgot) that the SE P800 is already shipping in the Northern Europe/Scandinavian countries and Hong Kong. But not until early 2003 will it reach most other markets. I live in Singapore, so it ain't too bad (SG has quite a prolific mobile market). The main reasons for buying the 6610 instead of waiting for the P800 are:

Size: 6610, though not a tiny phone, fits completely into my shirt/pants pocket (my t68i with the mp3 module is kind of long and unwieldy though).
Cost: The 6610 is just a couple of minor revisions over the 7210 (which i found out had a auto-power off bug in certain batches). Thus, it is available quite cheaply almost anywhere (About $650 SGD, which is equivalent to $372 USD.) This is quite a sweet deal for a 4k colour phone with polyphonic ringtones, GPRS, Radio, Camera attachments, small and such. On the other hand, I still don't know the price of a P800. I expect it to be well over $700USD. That's over 1.2k SGD. Very hurting on the wallet.
Time: I can buy the 6610 now. I can only buy the P800 later.

Purpose: The 6610 fulfills all my current needs at the moment, so its well worth the money. The P800 has video playback (which i don't use) and a wide variety of other great features which I do not know of at the moment and thus, I do not need now.

@accoleon, the 7650 isn't advertised as a \"smartphone\", but as an imaging-phone. That's nokias choice. Perhaps they think that'll interest more people. BUT that doesn't mean it isn't a smartphone! Why? - because of symbian. If you visit a nokia 7650 forum, i can assure you that you'll find that the average age and level of expertise is much higher there than in a t68i forum. @accoleon

Thanks for your detailed reviews. I was especially interested in the picturebooking issue.

Screen resolution, bluetooth and pc/device connectivity are also important to me.

What I'm hoping is for some US carrier to begin carrying the P800. Then I can jump from the T68i to the P800. Just hope it dosen't cost too much.

I also solved my IR via Nokia problems.

It seems that changing the transceiver type from Infineon (default for my IRJack USB-IrDa) to Vishay 6101E, and changing from Advanced Configuration and Power Interface PC (default driver for win2k/xp)to a Standard PC. I believe its the issue between USB IRQ hunting and Nokia's software.

@Raven, I didn't watch Nokia's advertisements too closely lol. But definitely, Symbian's a wonderful addition to Nokia's phones. Its open source too I believe. That's the main reason why their forums have greater expertise. The SE phones, on the other hand, features, tips/tricks and technical data has to be fished out of the phone by users

Hope this helps.
