Contacts, Messages and Calendar are the most important applications on a mobile phone. You don't want those closed, even if you use an alternate contacts/mail program.
Ok, I just thought there was a way of turning the auto-start off?
But its ok, I like it (P1) anyway, just those bugs, it works but I want it better, ho ho ho... like all tech lovers?

Sound Wierd to me, the only thing is bring it to Sony Errcs near you and ask them to reinstall the firmware again, hope this will work.

* Incomming SMS messages most be opened first before I can delete it.
-I can delete an sms on my p1i before opening it. Its just if I access it from the today screen does it not let me, but then I click on the sms and before it loads i hit delete. Works fine
* Old and deleted mail accounts still showing up on the today screen.
-Doesn't happen to me
* When phone is charging and turned off, some little backlight still on.
-Resart your phone. This happened to me once. Otherwise go to your backlight setting and make sure handheld is set to auto.
* Mail inbox only avail at the today screen, the inbox is missing inside the Messaging app.
-DUnno about this since I havent tried mail in a while
My only bugs that annoys me:
-In messaging, if i get a message or read a message, it takes me back to the first sms.
-I cannot go between messages easily without going back to the inbox. this is really bad with the previous bug because I can't read old smss then.
-If I scroll up from the first sms, it takes me to some random sms instead because it hasn't loaded the rest.
-It cant handle more than 1300 sms in the inbox. And if you get more, it wont show you unless you restart.
-If i click on new message or use a contact message shortcut, it has to open the whole messaging app first which is a time waster.

Maybe the picture is small and it's being stretched to fill the screen?

Haynzee
Maybe you drive too fast?
Just kidding...

yeah i think it's because you just used a small thumbnail for the contact, but when they call, the picture's resolution isn't good enough so it blurrs when stretched to fit the screen.

I'm amazed nobody's suggested a master reset?
There's
nothing inherently wrong with the standard messaging app, chinese or otherwise, which is why few if any alternatives exist. It shouldn't be behaving in the way the OP describes, and it seems obvious to me that the mail database has become corrupted for some reason - that's the only explanation for an inbox appearing on the Today screen but not in the messaging app itself, or for deleted accounts to still be visible.
It's not ideal, because it will involve the loss of all data, but your best bet is a master reset. This will reset the phone to "as new", and you can then go on to recreate your mail accounts etc. Obviously you'll want to sync your data first, and backup any files etc you may have on the phone (although the memory card will be preserved intact).

With regard to the various mailbox problems described to the original poster i must say that i have seen this as well. I think (but never tried to replicate it) that this happend due to restoring data after the last firmware update. As a result i stopped doing that

It is kind of tedious to set up the phone after each update, but on the other hand i get a fresh phone and get rid of a lot of crap that accumulates over time.
So, as other posters said, there's nothing wrong with the messaging app. Unfortunately there's everything wrong with the SE PC apps, especially with backup/restore.
As for the points listed below, yes, those are genuine annoyances. the way the unified inbox is handled is a complete mess. specifically (to repeat what is written below in different words):
* notifications sent to the displaying part from the mailbox do not take the current view into consideration. Thus, a sent sms updates the received sms screen needlessly.
* The displaying part generally is very bad at keeping the cursor where it belongs. specifically during changes to the view (loading or updating)
* the size limit is also coming from the displaying app. for whatever reason (it might be uiq is at fault)
i can heartily recommend the most recent versions of myphoneexplorer which allows for downloading sms to the desktop. so i can archive sms before a firmware upgrade and whenever i hit the size limit of the inbox.
Why the official PC Suite is such a mess, i cannot fathom. it's plain silly. please SE, hire the palm desktop people and let them do their thing for SE smartphones.
cheers
