you know, this is mainly a SE forum, that's why

El reg are right, this phone is a disappointment, i'd personally say major disappointment, and i had been desperately waiting for this handset, since i first read rumours about it. It should be my ideal phone, my main phone being a p990 and my old w800 as back up (when i'm camping etc..)
Finally i get my hands on one (a mates) and having played with it for a few hours, having waited what 9 months for this phone, i find i no longer wanted it! Yes it looks much cooler than my p990, but it didn't offer anything (yes 1 mega pixies extra camera...) than a p990 can't do. So i ask myself what's the point? and i honestly can't think of a reason to buy the w960 any longer. So yes this phone is a disappointment, SE really need to pull their socks up quickly.

cheers Oz

They say, get a K850 and put an 8GB card in it. What they fail to mention is how poor the K850 is as a music phone. Once you load up a big playlist in the media player, the phones other functions run at a severely slower rate than they do when not playing music. I can play music on my W960 and everything else zips along as it does when not using the media player.

Anyone who has this phone will tell you its main job is to be a music device and it does that very well. Files are copied to it very quickly (quicker than any other SE handset) and the media player's differences in UIQ are slight, but effective and benefits from a touchscreen.

The downsides to this handset are the lack of HSDPA (which is a bit of a mystery, especially as the W910 has it) and the fact that UIQ still isn't a "pretty interface". People complain about the camera but I think 3.2 mega pixels in a non-Cyber-shot device is pretty good. The K850 is very heavy compared to this phone so that could be one of the reasons for using a basic 3.2 mega pixel camera.

This was SE's first attempt at the Walkman-branded smartphone, I have every reason to believe the next one will improve on the shortcomings of the W960.

I'll say, solid if not unspectacular!

DCUK7,

This would be Sony Ericsson's 2nd attempt on a walkman-branded smartphone. The first one was the W950i. I'm sure you know this.

samsung d900 kicks ass
bawhaha obviously im joking, wouldn't touch the filth.

i own a p990 and recently upgraded to a w960 and haven't looked back.

anyone who can criticise the w960 obviously hasn't compared it properly to any other uiq device. its miles ahead of any of them, maybe on par with p1, but thats it.

it is an outstanding smartphone with all the trimmings. and finally, enough ram to function.

my p990 would die if i ran 3 applications at once, now i can run 15! and use the walkman in the background.

im sorry, but i am loyal through and through to se. and although they have some handsets that i wouldn't use, but you need to bear in mind that certain handsets are aimed at a target market, if you dont like the w960, then you probably aren't a fun loving classy professional, but more likely youre my uncle, who likes the n95 because its a nokia, and his mate had one down the pub with a dirty video on it.

but each to their own eh

Verdict

A well-specified but schizophrenic handset, that slightly disappoints...

Again...it speaks for itself...or maybe "well-specified" also is something bad now, together with "slightly" being "alot" or "meh"???

For pete's sake - that's honestly the quote you're clinging to? The only positive part is "well specified" (the P990 was "well specified") which is immediately qualified by the rest of the sentence - I suppose by your logic, if "slightly disappoints" is a good review, calling it "schizophrenic" must be absolutely glowing, right?

Then there is the score...75%...with medium score being 50% (again, last time i checked, and here there is no "lost in translation" problem)...i don´t see that has "meh"

75% = three quarters, last time I checked. It's three quarters good. That's good enough for you? Good enough for a flagship SE phone?

The N92 got 90%, are you comfortable with that? Are you happy with that comparison?

Seriously Ares, I sometimes wonder whose side you're on. Do you think you're helping SE by shaking your pom-poms and cheering on such mediocre products? By being content with "slightly disappointing" reviews? By being satisfied with 75% phones? Because however many you buy, there must be two more customers passing them by...

And of course...you have to add the other reviews...try, like i said, intomobile and All About Symbian...you´ll see they ALL said the same thing...the w960 is not great has it could have been, but still a good phone

Listen to yourself - they ALL said the latest top of the range SE smartphone is "not great", and you're celebrating! Crack open the champagne, SE have made an average phone!

Don't you miss words like "outstanding"? "Innovative"? "Great"?

But we all know where you´re preferences lay now, so, really its not a surprise

Yes Ares, that's right. After being fiercely loyal to E and SE for about seven years, and six handsets, I've now become their sworn enemy. I'm just here to stir up trouble. I'm probably being paid to do it, by the international anti-SE conspiracy, or something. I'm not at all still posting here because I genuinely still care about SE, and want them to do better than "slightly disappoint".

Yes, i even bought a cake to go with the champagne. And a funny hat. And fire crackers. And...get real!

I say it has it is...i saw you making an incorrect interpretation (IMO) of that review, and i made my coment...that´s all.

The w960 is just the phone i was expecting it to be, nothing too great but still a good phone. If you were expecting alot of inovation on it, you are really totally out of the picture of what SE is/was going through...no new hardware, no real inovation, and that was know for along time.

Also...am i saying something wrong when i say you know prefer WM phones?? But its great to know you are being "payed" for that lol
