I have read all the forum info on music files on P800 and now completed my tests to see if the P800 can play mp3Pro.
This info is of course based purely on my hearing.
First of all, I have never been happy with the quality of standard mp3's below 96Kbs but could not really tell much between 96kbs & 128kbs.
On my iPAQ which plays wma files I could go as low as 48kbs and sound just as good as 96kbs mp3, this was great especially with a 256MB side card
With the P800 only currently having 16MB and one of my main uses for the P800 is to use as an mp3 player I wanted to see if it did play mp3pro files.
After configuring dBPowerAMP music converter with the Thomson mp3pro encoder I created the default 64kbs mp3pro files from some 128kps mp3's.
With the PC Thomason player I was amazed at how well the music sounded compared to a normal 64kbs mp3 file.
With the P800 I initially thought the mp3pro files sounded slightly better (less distortion) but when comparing to a 96kbs or 128kbs mp3 there is no comparrison, the sound is so much richer (gets the hairs standing up on your arms).
So, the P800 will actually play mp3pro files but only at the same quality as a normal mp3 file. You need a proper mp3pro decoder in the P800 to get the benefit.
Will have to stick with 96kbs mp3 until some clever programmer gets mp3pro or wma to work
Just as a note. With a good quality music file, I find the P800 sounds better than the iPAQ.

Since my entire collection is in mp3 format anyway...re-encoding them to mp3pro just for the P800 isn't really a big deal... I can wait for the 128MB Duo instead and just use my original files.
The P800 doesn't support WMA since this is a Windows format.
AMR is supposed to be a good alternative (so I've heard anyway...I'm not sure) supposed to be smaller than MP3s... but I can't seem to find an encoder from mp3s. Does anyone know how to encode AMR?

No, 96kbs for mp3. Find mp3pro at 96kbs no different.
