I agree with this... Most phones are "moddable" todays... Except the new A200 platform walkmans... But soon FS operations will be available for them too so you would be able to increase your volume rapidly.

somehow SE makes their phones with good sound QUALITY but low VOLUME.
SE have always done that, to protect our hearing. According to the experts any louder than a certain level is able to do permanent damage. SE have decided, and it maybe due to bowing to pressure groups, to keep the volume no higher than this level.
It's a shame SE bow to the will of minority pressure groups, but I'd take quality over volume any day, but as already said in this thread you can boost the volume with mp3 gain or similiar.
However that said the experts ARE right. Wen you listen to music LOUD through headsets, YOU ARE DAMAGING YOUR HEARING!!!
So maybe something worth thinking about for when you are older if you don't want to be deaf as a post
I've already damaged my hearing - I grew up on the original walkman - cassette walkman that is, and they were LOUD man, louder than Nokia. Well before the goody two shoes got in on the "protect my kid's hearing" band wagon.

I think the low volume issue is to protect of hearing plus the SE original earphones are not loud. They have small diameters and thus they do not produce loud soundst. I tried other earphones and there is a noticeable difference.
I know a trick to make the volume much louder without losing sound quality as you might think from that. Use the equaliser and increase the band frequencies but you should adjust them correctly keeping them at almost equal level so that the sound does not get distorted.

I think it should be left to the consumer whether to have his ears protected or not.
