I cna understand going lighter though. Hardware revisions with better efficiency parts or something might make the models lighter, but heavier is a mystery

Well, there are a few variables at least. SEs are built in different places (though mainly China). Also, materials may change; that could depend on where they can source from. Parts may change with revisions, making them lighter or heavier.

Have you open up the batteries? There are China made and Japan made batteries. The casing may play a part. Another factor is one of your P1i has squeaky casing, squeaky casing tends to feel non solid and lighter, but it is actually the same weight.
A fully charged battery may feel heavier as the lithium ions are active.

The best way (apart from scratching your phone on purpose
) is to leave it on the table for few minutes, and than touch the phone with your lips. It sounds akward, but aluminium should be much colder then the plastic parts, as it dispate the heat quicker. If you can not feel the difference in temps, then it is probably painted plastic...
