Economically speaking its a very smart move. To be honnest I believe that in the near future the "joint venture" story would be the only fisible solution for a company to survive I agree with Jan: Sony is very good in promotion and Ericsson on the other hand is very strong in devolping new technologies but lacks marketing. So, Nokia with poor products compare to Ericsson's had enough space to expand because of good marketing.
My opinion is that at the end, consumers will gain something from this story. AT least I suppose we will have better products. Although I have to admit that I am not brand oriented consumer. I mean I don't really care if the phone I have is made by Ericsson or Nokia. I preffer to have the best possible product my money can buy.
Of course we must always rember that European consumers differ from Americans or Japanese consumers. Many Japanese corporations are trying hard to enter the European market. Europeans have eclectic tastes and they preffer quality instead of quantity. So, under this scope, Sony is happy because a new market is open. I am not sure, though, if the oposite is also true (European want to enter the Japanesse market).

i think its a good idea, cuz lately sony came with very strong mobiles with superb technology . we all know that sony is alomst the biggest and the most advanced company which deals with electronics. remeber the cmd z5 when it came to the market how strong it was, and still they are giving new idea which no ericsson or nokia thought about , like the memory stick which gives you unlimited memory and the biult in mp3 player...etc... while ericsson was till near time was doing very bad and lost alot in the market. so with these merge , i think we will get something which we never thought about and will remove nokia from the way.first is the new silver phone:)this is only the begining.. and who said it will decrease the compitition?? i believe that there are many other companies or what do u think?

Well so far i have still to see the benefits as both companies still have their own individual phones. But when they start designing together i'm sure it will really pay off.
Sony have things on their phone that are better than Ericsson, and Ericsson have better things than Sony. Put them together and u get a superphone

Put it this way... ericsson and sony did not decide to merge for one reason only!!
Ericsson is the worlds largest telecoms provider of equipment. This division always performed well financially. It was the handset division that caused ericsson overall to lose share value.
Ericsson always made popular phone that sold well but often made huge loses per project, such as the R520 ($10 loss per unit)
They then decided either to resturcture the group as they did. Flextronics now make their phones but that was not financially adequate as their future prospects were forcased in red.
To cut it short, sony and ericsson thought that they would be ideal partners..... It is more a financial rather than technological advance that ericsson and sony had merged for..
I am part of a business analyst group and we forcast overall that this is a good move compared to what ericsson and sony would have headed if the merger had not taken place.
Ericsson would have otherwise have sold its handset division to another company and who knows what crap they could do.
Personally, we think that ericsson could have brought in new management that dealt with large corporate retailers with experience at high level verge of bankrupcy!

this is probably not entirely true.
Ericsson handset division was probably in the verge of dying (they have signified their intention to stop manufacturing their own handsets then), but the

deal came along and an opportunity to synerigize sparked the new

line.

The Japanese electronics giant Sony and the Swedish mobile phone company Ericsson joined forces to revitalise their lossmaking mobile phone operations.
Each of the companies will own 50% of the new venture.
Sony will benefit from the deal because of Ericsson's customer base and mobile telephony knowhow.
Ericsson will benefit from links with Sony because its electronics products are seen as innovative, stylish and popular with consumers.
Ericsson had to take these steps not to be left in the dust by Nokia and Motorola. It would have risked not only to stay at 3rd but maybe also be past by other multimedia based new phones.
The good thing is the gained expertise in multimedia which Sony brings to the table. The bad thing is that even if this is a so-called 50/50 deal, Sony has the upper hand in decision making and have never succeeded to breakthrough in telecomunications
FOOD FOR THOUGHT....KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!
