AAC is not so good... Listening to my near field monitors, LAME MP3 against AAC comparable settings sounds better.
But in the end, no matter wich codec you use, you always have to choose between filesize or quality.
Some rippers that use LAME are Easy CD-DA Extractor or J River Media Center.
Best settings for use with our cell phones are ABR 96 / ABR 128 for space saving, or VBR 4 or VBR 5 for quality.
Plus better compatibility with portable devices

mp3 utilizes a smaller footprint compared to aac at the expense of audio quality (bit rate - wise).. i believe that people prefers mp3 primarily because of this specific reason.. on the other hand, aac entails more space primarily because of quality.

one poster, and i do agree with the post, that mp3 gains advantage primarily because of universal compatibility with most players (not to mention, audio-playing cellphones)..

personally, i don't delve much on technicalities between these two formats.. to ensure optimum audio quality for my favorite tracks, i encode them via mp3 with a minimum of 128kbps bit rate..

just a thought, mates! cheers

you are right about avoiding low bitrates - this is the best way to ensure good quality,r egardless of codec.

However you are not correct about your first statement. It's actually the opposite. AAC can compress a file more for the same quality as mp3. So for example an AAC encoded at 96Kbps is roughly equivalent to an MP3 at 128Kbps. This means AAC tracks can be smaller in size than MP3 without sacrificing quality.

I used to use AAC (especially in the early days when I had the K700 - 40MB only and no memory expansion), but now with 8GB memory cards I've reverted back to MP3 (which in my view sounds warmer and fuller than the clinical sound of AAC)

I usually encode at 320Kbps MP3. Either way, I've found 256Kbps and higher bitrates are necessary on most players regardless of codec. If you rip any lower than that you miss so much detail from the music it's like listening with ear muffs rather than headphones !!
