Let's say you want a headset with noise-cancelling - is that possible with a 3.5 mm jack? Possibly, but you'll end up with a rather large headset. The fastport connector can make use of the phone's processing power for the noise cancellation, while still being small. That is functionality.

If it is what you are saying, then why did SE introduce a dedicated NC headphone with a NC button?
Also, by what you are saying, you basically dissing off every single dedicated MP3 player, ever made, because all of them have a 3.5mm jack. Add to that an entire line up of music phones from motorolla nokia and samsung which have a 3.5mm jack.

Why don't you ask SE about that? I'll be awaiting the reply....
Obviously someone (*points finger at you*) can't tell the difference between a phone and a music player, but hey, what would you expect?
And no, I never said anything about it being wrong to have a 3.5 mm jack, that's not what this discussion is about. I said that the fastport connector is superior, that's all. Don't twist my words - your actions will end up biting you in the behind later in the show.

But at the end of the day SE will have to switch to mini/microUSB. Remember that agreement they signed last year?

You tell me, does the fast port connector make use of the phone's CPU to reduce noise? Anything to back that claim up?
And no, i wont ask SE anything, because you made a claim, and i made a statement that is true and that contradicts what you said: if the FP connector indeed does what you said, why did SE make a dedicated NC headphone?

Yes, that's exactly what it does. If you don't believe me, check the Walkman webcast on

@Mizzle
You really are missing the very simple fact that with other manufacturers who offer an 3.5m socket and their own headset plus converter you get a choice. Whilst with SE you only get the Fastport adapter with a 3.5m socket and that is no choice you are forced to use the Fastport adapter always.
Now if you believe this offers advantages or not is not the point we are talking about, choice is and SE doesn't give you any. If this was not at all important surely we wouldn't see so many requests for it from so many SE users. Or people saying this is what they want on a music phone so it rules out SE phones for them.

What choice? The choice of using an adapter or not? Well yes, that's really an important choice, and just an extra thing to think about. Come on, it's hardly of any importance. Besides, the adapter doubles as a microphone - looks to me like you're left on your own when listening to music only using a 3.5 mm jack cable. But then again, you can always carry around that extra adapter in those situations.....................

@Mizzle
Actually this doesn't affect me at all as i don't use my device to listen to Music, i prefer to use a dedicated player for much better results.
But once again that's not what SE said they said it gives more choice and it clearly doesn't as it doesn't give the user a choice at all they are forced to use the Fastport adapter. To try and claim it offers more choice is just absurd and without foundation if you only have one option there is no choice. Now if it is a better solution for most or all is a completely different discussion.

W980 could now be considered a dedicated music player having recieved awards for its music abilities.

You're playing with words here and you know it!
SE's point is valid and one could go further and say that A2DP makes the whole 3.5mm debate pointless anyway unless you use top-end headphones and few people would.
