The verses are not offensive.
actually the verses have a huge meaning behind it.
Its just the Music that they have added to it which is the issue.

What music do they not allow in Islam, PK?
I know after the revolution in Iran, they didn't allow any music for a while, but that's about as much as I do know.

Islam does not allow the believers to listen to any music.
May sound stupid but its what we follow and will do.
saying that many so called Muslims do listen to Music but that goes with Alcohol, drugs, fornication etc
Each religion has Laws, whether one follows it or not is down to each person.
You may wonder how can you live life with no music!!
We muslims do have the Qur'an which we pray with Rhyhmic tones as the Holy Qur'an states in verse 4 of chapter 73:
and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones.
we also have other things called Naats etc but Music is prohibited.
Hope it makes sense!

That makes a bit of sense, but saying that, it doesn't make much sense at the same time... surely there's some sort of justification as to why exactly Muslims are not allowed to listen to music - like pork, because in the hot countries etc., they roll around in their own poop.
And wouldn't rhythmic tones count as music..?
Ahh. Religion = confusion.

Thanks for the replies PeterKay, I must say I never knew that Islam disallowed listening to music but I also find it a little confusing. Aren't there many musical instruments from Islamic countries?
Would the playing of games with bgm be forbidden as well?
I can see why there may be objection to verses used with music but surely there has to be a certain level of acceptance of the world? As PK says many Muslims do things which are forbidden, I'd be interested to know how much objection to this there is within the rest of the Muslim community?
I agree that nothing should be done to deliberately cause objection or unrest but I don't believe that there was any deliberate offense here and the context of the game is perhaps the least offensive game ever made
I also read that the person who composed the track was a Muslim himself. Why would he have done this in the first place?
I do have a concern over the reaction to this if I'm honest. As mentioned earlier this isn't the first religious objection to a PS3 game with Resistance FoM being the first. That was an objection to a holy place (Cathedral) being used as a war setting.
I am Catholic and still I disagreed with the objection, the context of the game actually involved you DEFENDING the Cathedral fom the mutant enemies, but the point is that nothing happened beyond an appology.
My concern is that this reaction from Sony is one in fear of being accused of racism (I'm afraid I don't buy into the political correctness gone mad thing).
Surely this game could have been patched on day 1 rather than a worldwide recall? I expect that Muslims would have appreciated the song being removed in this way would they not?

National Anthem of Islamic Republic of Iran... That has instruments, and Iran is an Islamic Republic. A country which until like 5-6 years (?) ago, didn't allow music to be played (that's how much I can remember from my trip back in 2002 I think it was, I was pretty young - I'm 15 now), actually had a national anthem all along!
And what about
this chap, he seems to have had his own bloody anthem!
Religion and confusion is endless.

Guys
Many Islamic countries have national anthems etc with Music but that does not mean Islam allows it, it is confusing but thats how it is.
Some say the Duff instrument is allowed but nothing more, the best way is to avoid them all (for Muslims that is).
In this day and age where Music is all around you, whether its mobile related, shopping, radios it is difficult to avoid but one must do their utmost best to do avoid it if they follow the Laws of the religion.
The dude who made the track with the verses may have been a Muslim but that could be only by name, he has no idea what he has done.

Apparently the composer is from Mali and, according to
Wikipedia, "Islam as practiced in Mali is moderate, tolerant, and adapted to local conditions". Perhaps that would explain why he didn't think he was doing anything wrong.
Interestingly though this song has NOT been composed just for the game. The song, entitled Tapha Niang by Toumani Diabate, was actually released in 2006 and is still for sale on
Amazon. It's also currently hosted on Diabate's
MySpace page.
I wonder why no objection had been made previously and whether the song will now be withdrawn from public sale?
I think all religions need to modernise, some of the beliefs of the Catholic Church are just laughable in todays modern world. They'd all benefit from moving with the times rather than clinging stubbarnly to tradition. It's easily possible to keep tradition but also update.
