...SE will also merge its three handset development divisions into one...

Er, so which ones are these exactly?

They don't have any 3G yet that's why, but the phone still works over there. When I was in China with mine W910, Then I saw W908, same phone but W908 is without 3G and front Videocam.. why make 2 of them..?? I mean W910 still works good over there.. most of SE phones are 2G/3G without 3G still works on 2G..

because it costs more to build the same phone with 3G components when it's not going to need them.

Honestly the "i" and "c" variants aren't considered different phones. This is not what SE are talking about. They are talking about different MODELS ie: W910. W980 etc, it's got nothing to do with regional variants which imho are necessary. Why make 3G capable phones for regions that don't have 3G?

An example: W910, W760, W595, W705 (? - Rika)

Do you think it's necessary?? At least one of those isn't...

If it's cheaper to produce 2G version than 3G, and sell it for same price, it's very smart from SE side..

It's still good they decide skip some models from next year...

Maybe they do maybe they don't. I would think that they probably sell for a bit less in the Chinese market... with the massive number of ultra cheap and copied handsets in that market SE would need to be very competitive.

btw, I agree they should cut by 20%, but more than that is not necessary imho. 20% is 1 in 5, whic is enough to removethe confusion but not enough to kill off the choice for consumers.

And maybe they should try entering the CDMA market. Low-end handsets like these sell like crazy in APAC and have generated strong revenues for the Koreans and the Chinese. Also, CMIIW but AFAIK the CDMA network is better for wireless data connection, at least in my country.

I agree, though in Australia they just recently dropped the cdma market - it's all umts now (or gsm)

Telecom NZ is phasing out CDMA technology also in favour of UMTS 850 but without the lower spec 2G/2.5G GSM technology. Low spec non 3G phones are becoming obselete over here.

CDMA licencing fees are prohibitively expense, even Nokia spat the dummy making Qualcomm look a bit silly for a time.

Ericsson as whole left the CDMA market a couple of years ago since there was not much to gain for them in that market. By the end of 2006 around 10-15% of all subscribers worldwide used CDMA and it seems to slowelly go downhill. Of those I would guess NA has the biggest subscriber base.

I believe the biggest (or at least one of the biggest)CDMA phone manufacturer is LG. Without that market my guess is LG would be even further behind SE in terms of phone market share world wide.

It should be noted that what generally is refered to as 3G, UMTS etc. uses a variant of CDMA (WCDMA) as a carrier interface.
