I used to listen to songs at 64kbps or 96kbps in ogg format on the p800i so I could get as many songs on as possible :0 The audio was acceptable, and with 3 or 4 128mb Pro Duo cards (the largest the p800i could handle) I had myself a nice music collection on the go. I think 128kbps is certainly acceptable unless you're an audiophile who thinks he's missing some dynamic ranges.

Back in my 41MB K700i days I encoded my music using CD EX 1.5.1 in MP3 format at 80 kbps. That sounded average but I could get 8 - 10 songs on board so I was happy!
My V630i played the same tracks back with slightly better sound quality but the (A200) V640i played them back exceptionally well, detailed and full with okay bass levels (megabass built in).
I now use iTunes to encode at 128 kbps AAC which sounds good on my 8GB iPhone 3G but even better on my V640i which is now sporting a 8GB M2 card.
I use the OEM headphones (V640i's are better than iPhone's) and am quite happy with them.

ATRAC3 is supposed to be good. Too bad most phones don't support it

mp3 at 128kbps joint stereo is the most optimized setting for me. Of course higher bitrates are always better depending on the sensitivity of your ears and the quality of the headphones you are using but personally, i think anything above 192kbps is an overkill.

128kbps MP3. No point of 320kbps or 256 if you dont have good headphones.

Thank you all for the replies.
I would convert some of the "permanent" mp3s in 128kbps, but please tell me more about that battery draining ...
I wanted to ask you also if the phone plays quiet or just the stock headphones are really really crappy, or maybe there is a capping of the volume ...
